PCI soundcard advice?

Which PCI soundcard has high quality gameport and is
"future proof" for 3d sound effects etc.  Musical
qualities are not important for me.  Thanks for any
help.

I'm using the Diamond MX200 which is awesome but you could probably get by with
the MX80 if MUSIC/MIDI isn't that important.  The MX200 does offer the ability
to run 4 speakers which is a MUST for true 3D sound.  The price for this card
should drop when the MX300 releases in a few months - heck, I'll even sell you
my MX200 cause I am definitely getting the MX300 the day it releases.

Jari, already pre-ordered the Monster MX300. From what I hear, it will
be great. I am pairing it up with USB Altec Lansing Digital
Speakers.......Matt

I was under the impression that USB speakers, for the most part,  used their
own sound processor, and therefore a soundcard was redundant unless using
DOS games in DOS mode (ie. not in a DOS-box).

You can set the primary playback device under Win98 to be the sound card,
but if you do that you might as well buy a cheaper pair of 'non-USB'
satellite/sub speakers, because you are essentially disabling the USB
speakers...

You are absolutely right. I should have said that I'm pairing it up with USB
speakers only to play DOS based games. The USB speakers alone will be enabled
when I run anything in W98. My system was built with many redundencies such as
MegaMonster setup with Hercules Thriller AGP card. Best of both worlds......
Thanks for clarifying that....Matt

Still fail to see why. Have you ever used a Good 3D sound card?

You could defiantly save yourself some money either in the card or in the
speakers (I'd be inclined to get a great sound card and non-USB speakers,
...  notice I didn't say cheaper :-)  )   However,  if it's DOS
compatibility you want, and you want the USB speakers for Windoze, grab a
good 'ole ISA SB16 PNP.  They are still available new to OEMs and you should
be able to pick one up for about $30.00.  Or even the Ensoniq PCI if you
want to stay away from ISA.   Compatibility....  If it's a game that needs
to be run from DOS mode,  SB16/AWE32 is probably the best setup you'll get
anyway (90% of the time anyway, MIDI aside).

Maybe my wife's getting to me on my hardware purchases...
