If your using a GeForce2, you will probably find your framerates 5-10%
better running in Open GL, if your not running fsaa. Also, if your running
the GeForce2, t&l hal in d3d  is taking advantage of the hardware transform
and lighting on your vid card, and you should see much better performance
versus non t&l in d3d. Try Open GL and then tnl d3d and compare , you may
like the looks of the d3d better, or the performance of opengl better.
Btw, Open GL automatically takes advantage of TnL.

During my install routine N4 gave me the option of selecting HAL T&L (I
think that's what it said).  This is on a Voodoo5 5500.  I installed it and
everything seemed to be working fine until I got into the***pit.  The
graphics were all screwed up - big triangle right in the center of the
windshield, guages missing and the mirror was in the floorboard.

Went back and reconfigured without T&L and it runs fine.

Make sure vsynch is off in your d3d settings.

The Voodoo5's drivers incorrectly reports that it can do TnL due to the
"Geometry Assist" feature you can enable in it's D3D settings.  We made 3dfx
aware of the problem quite some time ago and they apparently were working on
a solution, but with the recent events surrounding the company I'm not sure
it will ever be available.  So for now 3dfx users shouldn't use the
misreported (TnL HAL) renderer.

The flickering seems to be caused by a problem in the Detonater3 series of
drivers (if you were to go back to the Detonator2 5.xx series it would go
away), but fortunately it is an easy fix. You just need to disable V-Sync
(which should give a nice performance boost as well).  The V-Sync option is
available by default for OpenGL, but in order to have it available in D3D
you'll need to install the 'coolbits' registry hack.  Just save the
following file, and then double-click to import the registry settings.  You
should then have a V-Sync option in your "More Direct3D" display setting.
Set it to "Always Off" and the flickering should go away.

Eric,

Is there a GeForce driver/settings combo. that will work for N4 and GPL?  I
have tried the Detonator 3 drivers on my system, but they cause a flickering
problem in the menus of GPL.  Would that be fixed by the V-Sync. option?  My
monitor runs at 85 Hz, so it may be a moot point?

I don't want to upgrade to improve N4 frame rates and performance if it is
going to muck-up my GPL!!

Lastly, the OpenGL in N4 doesn't look quite as good as D3D...seemingly with
more blocky pixelation (flight-sim. style) in the medium range in front of
the car.  Is that why the performance is better, or are there other aspects
of OpenGL that are better?  How do we optimise the "looks" of the OpenGL
selection?

Thanks,

Marc.

I tried the t&l hal with my V5 and it did run slightly better than vanilla
D3d.
But I had several big texture problems on the dash,  and windshield.  Tough
to drive with blotches blocking your view.  For my PIII 500 with a V5 5500,
the D3d is noticeably faster than opengl.
