No, it really is quite ***considering the brand name and all the hype.
er.... until they release several patches to correct the zillions of faults
it has.
Roll on GrandPrix3.
> No, actually, you're just impatient and stupid........
F1RS works fine for me...
... unlike GP2 which chucks me out to DOS with as DOS4GW error every now &
then.
As for the brand name & all the hype I think your getting confused with
another recent racing sim - I consider the Ubisoft release quite low key -
the hype as such has been generated by the enthusiasts here in RAS - my own
expectations have been exceeded with this game (unlike GP2).
At least Ubisoft are actively involved in further developing the product
(as indeed are Microsoft to be fair) unlike Microprose with GP2.
Cheers
Tony.
Erm..GP2 was never meant to go in Windows...it was DOS
designed!!
F1RS graphics are ***- the car looks wrong..look at the
airboxes above the drivers head.

I totally agree. Personally while I'm driving and staring out of the
front of my car and looking at the back of the computer cars, just
knowing that the airboxes that I can't see are wrong just totally
ruins it for me....
Ahem....

Who said I was running it in Windows?
Actually I was running it in DOS - to eliminate the Win95 possibility.
Still crashed!

I agree that they are working very hard to fix the faults of F1RS that many
users are experiencing.
Someone said here that UBI admitted in an email that they were committed to
releasing it before the end of 1997 due to licensing limitations (although
I cannot verify this) and that it just had to be released in its current
state otherwise they would have to pay for a new license agreement from F1.
This may be bullshit but I did read it here.
By the way, I think that several glorious full page (and front flap cover)
adverts in UK computer *** magazines constitutes considerable hype.
Especially when the slogan says: "Sometimes you'll wish is was LESS REAL".
(Admittely not hype in the same sense as the likes of Quake2 & Tomraider2).
It appears that those with 3Dfx cards are having the least of the
graphics/speed problems whereas those using Direct3D (e.g. with PowerVR)
are having more problems.
After an initial panic I worked methodically and really very hard to try to
make it work properly but failed. I can see F1RS has great potential but at
the time of release and until fix-it patches are available then I supposed
you've got to expect a lot of negative responses here from genuinely
frustrated users.
My copy went back to the shop within a week. I'm sure if they fix the bugs
etc then I'll buy it again (by that time it may be available at a cheaper
price) - unless of course GP3 comes out. In the meantime might even give
the tintops a try i.e. the new TOCA.

Agreed - I did not see these adverts. I was really referring to the long
term build up of GP2 - which had as waiting for about a year over expected
release, and we were aware of its existence (screenshots etc.) for I don't
know how long. At least this product has had to my knowledge a reasonably
short time for consumer awareness, and the hype that induces.
Yes I think F1RS is great because I am not being frustated with these
problems with my 3DFX card. The replay problem (causing the machine to
freeze) appears to have gone away with the patch on my system. So I am
happy, but I appreciate others are having problems.
I guess we are pretty lucky here in the UK. We've got F1RS & TOCA, the US
have CART PR, which by all accounts requires even more patching.

No one.
Marc
It was NOT designed for Win95 and neither was it designed to run as a
DOS-box within Win95. The fact that it might very well do so has nothing
to do with it.
Geoff Crammond started coding this game back in 1992 and no procedures had
been made available by MS for Win95-native games that early.

THAT is not true. Installing GP-2 under Win95, like using the install-wizard
from configuration, installs a DIFFERENT GP-2.EXE then when you install
under DOS.
So, YES, there is a Win95 version of GP-2. Same as Win95 Red Alert is way
different then Dos Red Alert.
GP2 Win95 crashes when you use a replay and change your viewpoint (At least,
does on my PC). You can't start GP2 in DOS when you installed it under
Win95. They're 2 different things.
So?
When GP2 was finally released, Win95 was pretty common on PCs and GP2 HAD to
include a Win95 setup, which it does, in fact.
You can install GP2 DOS or GP2 Win95. 2 different versions of the same
program.
And still, you only get 14.6 FPS on GP-2 no matter WHAt you do. I've got a
P-166 with 32 Mb of Edo, a 12X CD-player, I'd expect a fluid run of GP2
since my system was top-notch back then when GP2 was released.
But NO.
Now, with the same config I run F1 RS and every time I'm blown away by the
great FPS, the fluid run of it, the sheer beauty of it and the fun of
driving the track knowing, one mistake means the graveltrap.
Yesterday I just ran around Melbourne and I noticed that after I had spun
and travelled through the dirt, on my next lap, the dirt was still on the
track as the car began to slide while I was taking the corner with more car.
How's that for accuracy?
