GPL clock runs @ 2X - Help

by Robert Rosche » Tue, 15 May 2001 00:57:43

I recently built a new machine and have a problem with GPL. The game clock
just runs too fast. The timer in practice mode only takes 34 seconds real
time for a full minute of game time. Needless to say, this is difficult to
drive. This is with patch 1.2, with or without the D3D patch. Prior to
installing the 1.2 patch, version 1.0 appeared to run even a little faster.
The system is a 1.7 P4 with a GForce 3. I am running WinMe.  I have read on
some other forums about the N4 Demo causing similiar GPL problems. I had
installed and patched the full N4 prior to installing GPL. I uninstalled
everything and made sure all of the papy*.sys files were removed from the
win\system32\driver directory. Fresh install of the game does not help.
Fresh format without installing N4 doesn't help.  DX7 vs DX8 - same
behavior.  Gforce 2 vs Gforce 3 doesn't help.  I have seen some older vague
references to this problem around the web but no solutions.

I have installed GPL several times over the years in my systems and I have
never seen this problem before. Anyone have any ideas on this one?

Thanks, Robert

Robert,

The only thing I can say is ME TOO. I also built a P4 1.7 gig hz.
machine and see the same results. the funny thing is the ( Alt F )
Key says 7- 8 FPS full detail 1600/1200 and max on everything
including sound.

I used the Gforce 3 card with no problems before I hooked up the 1.7
P4, It has to be the cpu causing the problem.

Good luck

Thanks for the input.  I know 2 people running 1.5 P4 machines with no
problem.  1 is a Dell machine, the other is an Asus P4T mobo.  Both are
using WinMe.  I am using the P4T with the 1004 BIOS.  I tried the 1005 beta
BIOS with no change.  Which motherboard are you using?  I have posted on
some GPL forums but I have not gotten any positive responses.

I also run ME. I have a Supermicro P4STA motherboard..
Looks like we may have a problem :( I already missed one league race.
Don't guess we can count on Sierra to help much either.

This drove me nuts a couple of months ago, using voodoo 3 on Windows 2000
server.

The solution for me was to install an older voodoo driver, the one that
ships with 2000.  The beta voodoo drivers were the problem.

Well I had a simular problem after uprading to a PIII 933. and voodoo5.

I had tweaked AI files installed in the game with all the patches and latest
drivers and w98se.
Changing back to the original AI files from the gpl cd-rom solved the problem
for me.

Succes

FWIW I just tried installing the GPL demo (9 March 98. Really?) on my 1.4G
Athlon system and that's the same, even running software emulation.

I got this off of the Sierra Race Simulator Forum:

"Grant Reeve from Papy, the guy who made the d3d patch, was on VROC
tonight.. GPL does NOT work on a 1.7 gig and probably never will.. They
fixed the problems with 1.7 cpu's for N4, but doing so for GPL would take
way to much time and papy probably won't spend this time anymore on GPL"

I am bumming.......

Well, I probably won't get to 1.7 gig for another TWO computers...
Sorry about your problems, though.

Does this mean 1.7 and beyond or just something peculiar about the 1.7??
And any idea why it is a problem?

Marc.

Furthermore, is this limited to Intel CPU's or do AMD ones suffer from the
same problem?

I'd like to keep GPL up and running even after my next upgrade.

An educated guess is that all 1.7 GHz (and greater) machines are too quick
and something is breaking down in the software. It means we'll have to go
back to "Turbo" buttons like we had in the PC AT days to support games
written for slower processors :-)

Alternatively, I wonder if something like MO'SLO.COM (which slows the
processor down by adding cycles) would do the trick?

By the way I read it, I am assuming this means 1.7 and beyond.  I think your
question is valid and the statement could be interpreted other ways.
