A couple of questions regarding Grand Prix II.

1. With the opposition spread set to 1994 performance
for drivers and teams, can I expect to do better
driving a Williams as opposed to say a Simtek?

2. The manual says "you can go faster without the
driving aids."  Can I theoretically go faster without
using the throttle help driving aid (F7)?  My problem
is, I am using the keyboard controls, and switching
off throttle help makes the car almost uncontrollable.

Thanks,

The only things that change with choosing another car, are
the car-colors and the position in the pits. The players car
always has the same grip/downforce (for a certain wing-setting
ofcourse) and the same power (I believe it's 716HP).

Turning the driving-aids F1-F2 off will allow you to go
faster. Since you're using the keyboard, you'd better keep
F7 switched on. It can be done without, but it'll take a
lot of tapping the throttle-key.
And then ofcourse, there are the Steering-help and Opposite
Wheel Lock, wich you better keep switched on, again because
of using the keyboard (BTW:to turn it off for a tryout, you
will have to make another control-set in Control Method).

When using a steering-device like the Trustmaster T2, it
becomes a whole different story. In that case, at least in
my oppinion, the only good drive is the one without any help,
the help-options are only for people who are new to GP2, or
only drive at occasion at a friends and for little kids.
But driving without any help will take a lot of practise,
practise, practise. Like a friend of mine; he's driving with
steering help on (T2), and shattering my times (by 2 secs),
but I know that if he turns it off, he won't get near me. At
least for a long time. (Yeah, it's you Michel, turn the damn
thing off).

The general consensus is that any car you drive will have the
performance of the Williams.

: 2. The manual says "you can go faster without the
: driving aids."  Can I theoretically go faster without
: using the throttle help driving aid (F7)?  My problem
: is, I am using the keyboard controls, and switching
: off throttle help makes the car almost uncontrollable.

You may achieve some "speed" by turning off braking and auto gear
changing.  But if you are using the keyboard, you will more than likely
need all of the other helps just to control your car.

NO. Performance for the human-driven car is always the same.

Yes and not. You can acelerate faster but the maximum velocity will be
the same.

I'm using keyboard as well, and my experience is that switching off the
driving aid F7 helps much. You only have to set the first gear at 39 to
41 and
your car will be controllable. After a few laps without F7 I could
improve my
best lap times at least for half a second.

Yep, I did it also. It takes _a_lot_ of time to get used to, it takes much more
concentration, it takes a completely different driving style, but it improves
times in the end. All the fast guys do it that way.

Don't give up too soon....  :-)

Dito. I didn't even pay any attention to F7 until a few weeks after I
got the sim. When I did, I found it to be a real lamer's choice. With
it, much of the challange of gp2 disappears.

I'd say "turn it off"! Then you'll get that wonderful chance to
practice those schumi-like skills :)
