After reading so many postings from happy GPL users I decided to download
the demo, with the view of buying the game if it is half as good as reports.

However I am having probs with sound distortion and poor performance, very
jerky and unplayable. I am hoping someone can help me.

My system spec is:

AMD k62/300
Intel 740 AGP 2d 8mb card
Creative Voodoo 2 8mb
Creative Soundblaster AWE32

I have tried playing the game with and without 3dfx selected, same problem
exists.

I have updated all drivers, to no avail (including 3dfx drivers from
3dfx.com)

The sound distortion also exists when in the menus (the PA announcements)

The demo will not let me change sound quality, it is "16 Bit 22khz"

I have also experimented with the number of voices option, with no
improvement.

What resolution are you in ? You can't expect much out of that machine anyway.
I played on a K6/2 300 overclocked to 330 with 2 12 MB Voodoo 2 in SLI mode
and that was decent in practice, but not more.

Is this with the original 0.0.0.5 demo or the official 1.0.0.0 demo
(look at the red text in the lower right corner of the splash screen)?

it is the 0.0.0.5 version
