GPL Demo (Sound Problem)

I've had the demo loaded before & played at 1024 x 768 with no problem.  I
reformatted my HD and reinstalled my programs including GPL.  I still get the
1024 x 768 but the sound is really garbled.

Any ideas what has happened?  Sound works great in N2, NFS 3, and everything
else I have.
