SCGT Help?

by Haqsa » Tue, 03 Jul 2001 01:33:45

I recently started playing Sports Car GT, it came bundled with my new
Logitech wheel.  Despite being a couple years old it's a pretty fun
game, but I'm having some problems with it.  Whenever I try to run a
race in the rain, the game crashes with an error message about a missing
bitmap file.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks,
Hal

does it happen at the same track?  or at all of them?
Have you patched the game up to v1.551?
and what video card / display options are you using?

Try a reinstall. I have had some problems loading a track because of missing
files. Reinstalling the game might help. If it doesn't you should try to
manually copy the files from the cd to your scgt directory.

It happens at any track I try, but it only happens when I try to run a
race in the rain.  Dry races or night races work fine.  It happened both
before and after patching to 1.551, and even after trying the "fixed"
1.551 patch from The Pits.  It is missing a bitmap file called
"cloud000.bmp" or something like that, which I believe is part of the
skybox used for racing in the rain.

I am using a 32 meg Radeon, with all display options in SCGT set to max.
I tried turning mipmaps and alt. blending method on and off, it had no
effect.

I already reinstalled a couple of times, it didn't help.  I looked for
the file on the CD, it's not there.  I think it is probably a file that
is supposed to be packed into one of the .mas files anyway.  I checked
the size of the .mas files against the CD and they looked fine.  I'm
kind of wondering if the build for the CD is bad, and because it was a
bundled OEM CD nobody really caught it.

I seem to remember that there is a bug when your desktop resolution is
different to the in game resolution. Have you tried setting these to the
same settings?

Also, have you added any third party add-on's (cars, tracks), there may be a
problem with one of those. I have found when editing my own cars that if I
make a mistake in the car the game crashes and complains about one of the
track textures, not the wrong one in the car!

SCGT Help?

by Haqsa » Wed, 04 Jul 2001 02:04:54

I am running SCGT at 1024x768, same as my desktop.  However I am running
my desktop at 32 bit color depth, and I would suppose, based on its age,
that SCGT probably can only run at 16 bit color depth.  I will try
changing my desktop color depth to see if that fixes the problem, but I
doubt that's it, since the game runs just fine as long as I don't
specify wet weather.

I have not installed any third party add-ons.  I am using the supposedly
"fixed" patch from The Pits, but I was having the problem before that
also.

I really think that one of the .mas files is messed up.  I guess I will
have to download a .mas file editor and go poking around in there to see
what is missing.  Specifically it looks like a sky bitmap that is only
used during rainy weather is what is missing.  Perhaps if I can figure
out exactly which one is missing I can just get somebody else to e-mail
it to me and add it back in myself.

Thanks for your help,
Hal

Nope, the color depth was not the problem.  This time I tried racing in
career mode, and it crashed at Chatham with the message that it was
missing c:\games\sports car gt\chta\maps\flga00.bmp.  I also just
noticed that the message box has the title "cube error", which I think
someone else in this newsgroup was complaining about.

SCGT Help?

I've experienced this same problem and it's driving me crazy. There is
no problem with the mas files and there is no missing file. This is
purely a bug, possibly with nvidia cards. If you switch to 800x600 the
game will play fine but it doesn't look nearly as good. That's why I'd
like to find a fix for this.

I have an ATI Radeon, so it is definitely not an nvidia bug.

Thanks for the tip.  800x600 works fine on my PC also.  It does kind of
suck to have to play at that resolution, but I guess it'll have to do
until WSC comes out.

Yep, 800x600 is the safest, though least satisfying solution.

I have an ATI All-in-Wonder RADEON, so RADEON is a common thread for
you and I.  This issue occurs on about 6 tracks only (I think they
were all done by the same guy.)  Chatham, Sebring, Road Atlanta... I
can look up the others if you need.

Alternate solution (works for all tracks except Sebring).

Get Ban Scene and extract all the track files. In /dat go into the
xxxx4.scn the file for the track -- make a copy -- then edit out the
anim code referring to the file you just got the cube error with
(flga, etc).

This doesn't work at Sebring (but does work with the Sebring99
add-on). I haven't been able to find anyone with a  fix for the
original Sebring.

Morton,

Thanks for the reply.  I had already downloaded Ban Scene, just hadn't
quite gotten around to trying it.  Now I have a good reason.  It's too
bad I can't get Sebring to work, but it really isn't one of my favorite
tracks.  Too flat.  Anyway I will definitely give this a try.  This is
my favorite game right now, but the low res graphics are really
annoying.

Thanks,
Hal
