video card problems

by R/S » Fri, 19 Apr 2002 02:54:54

I just "upgraded" video cards, going from a Gainward GeForce 2MX, 32MB to a
Gainward G3 Ti 200, 128 MB, Power Pack Golden Sample Model Ti/500.  While I
gained a very slight 3D Mark score, I actually lost a few FPS in NASCAR 2002
at some tracks.  I used  the Detonator Destroyer and followed the
instructions at Guru3d.com to remove the old NVIDIA files. I also upgraded
to the latest 4-in-one drivers after installing the new card.  Although I
saw no improvement with the new card after the upgrade.  I also test with
AGP 4X enabled and disabled, with very little difference in performance.
While I am not interested in tweaking for high 3D Mark scores I do want to
find out why I my frame rates have not improved over the old card.  As a
point of reference my 3D Mark 2000 score went from 4457 to 7563.  My current
3D Mark 2001SE score is 5263, and my PCMark 2002 score is CPU 2957/ Mem
1996/ HDD 1050.

In NASCAR 2002, I test at exactly the same settings and tracks with both
cards, using OpenGL with v-sync off in display properties, and anisotropic
filtering to "2".  Resolution at 1024x768x16 and all graphic options (except
wheel) on and maxed out including cars. Sound set to 8.

At Texas, at the rear of a maxed out field at the start of the race my fps
with both cards is 24/25.

I got to be doing something wrong here.  Any and all advise appreciated.

Thanks

You are setiing the AF value to 2 in the rendOGL.ini file right? NR2002 3d
config will set this to 8 for 3 levels of AF on a GF3 card. If you are only
doing it in the display properties this will get over riden by the game.
The only other thing to check is to make sure FSAA is turned off. If you can
post the fill rate reported in the rendOGL.ini and we can compare it to make
100% sure you are getting what you should. One last thing watch the core/mem
speeds. For some reason when I go away from OEM driver they do not always
stay set correctly. I went to using NVmax to set them instead of Expert
Tool.

As far as your 3d mark score going from 4457 to 7563 is a 70% increase so I
would call that a little better than a "slight increase"

Well the AF value was set at 8, so I moved it to 2, and maybe picked up 1 to
2 fps.  They are jumping between 25 and 26.
Where do I turn off  FSAA?  Not sure what that is.
Also don't see a "fill rate" reported in the rendogl.ini file.  Here is what
I have in the rendogl.ini file

.[3D Accelerator Analysis]
PolyRate=622.74
TestedFullScreen=1
TextureSetSize=121348449
BitsPerPixel=16
Height=768
Width=1024
AnisotropicLevel=2
UseStencilBuffer=0
MinFilter=9987
MagFilter=9729
Renderer=GeForce3/AGP/3DNOW!
Version=1.3.1
Vendor=NVIDIA Corporation

Poly rate was what I was loking for. That looks to be in order as well. The
FSAA is set in the display properties. Its in a couple of levels. IT shouls
at least set to auto, but I'd just turn it off.
