a race goes on is related to all the memory being sucked
dry by the replays being stored. Since I very rarely go
more than 2-3 laps back in replay mode, is there any way
to reduce the amount of footage stored?

If people read all the manuals and readme files, this newsgroup would be
mostly empty.
Vintook
Yup, because all manuals state that this particular game/sim is the best!
Now *that* would save loads of bandwidth ;o)

[Replay]
replayMemoryOverride=0 ; Kbytes of replay memory to use
The default is "0" as shown above. N4's replay will use as much system
memory is as available, and continually "push out" the earlier part of the
session, only saving as much replay as it finds memory available. If you
want to determine a set amount of memory for it to use, remember the
numerical value is in kb. On my server it's set to 110000 to capture a
replay that's just over 10mb. If you want to basically kill the replay
buffer, I'd recommend setting it to 10 or 50.

Only a dedicated server can control the amount of replay saved
Even then it starts with the beginning, not the end (and going back) of each
session
And I'm not sure the amount of replay in the buffer affects the frame rate
If so, the only way to improve that is forcing windows to a Min/Max setting
in your Virtual Memory settings
Right click on My Computer, select Properties, Performance, Virtual Memory
Set both at 1.5-2.0 times your ram size in Kb
Ex 512Mb x 2 x 10=10,240
Ex 256Mb x 1.5 x 10 = 3,840
Also, with the new patch, you can limit some of the file size with this
setting in yout player.ini file...
[Misc]
clear_replay_each_session=0 ; Erase replay tape between
sessions?
Set to 1
Hope this helps ya

In your main N4 folder, there's a file called core.ini. Open that up until
you reach this section:
[Replay]
replayMemoryOverride=100000 ; Kbytes of replay memory to use
Adjust this number to whatever you want; the lower the #, the less replay
saved, etc. I think the default is 64000, and even that's much more than
2-3 laps.

CONTROLLING REPLAY MEMORY
By default NASCAR? Racing 4 will try to use a much free memory as is
available for replays. This should be fine for most users, however if you
find that you need to force this to a larger value to save longer replays,
or wish to force it to a smaller value if performance is suffering, you may
edit the "replayMemoryOverride" value in [Replay] section of CORE.INI. This
value is in KB, so for a 64MB replay buffer you would set this value to
65,536 (64MB x 1024KB/MB).
Note that when NASCAR? Racing 4 is run as a dedicated server only a minimum
512KB of replay buffer will be used to maximize performance and minimize the
load on the server. If you wish to save replays from a dedicated server you
will need to override this value.

Is that second part really that hard to understand????
Must be.
