It is called Field of Vision (FOV)
Because we are racing on a flat (kinda) 2D screen, game manufactures are
forced to give us a large FOV then what would normally be directly in front
of us. This is to give us a little bit of peripheral (sp) vision that would
otherwise be lacking. Basically, look straight ahead down the road in your
normal car, take the view that normally runs from your drivers side window,
to the window rail to the far right of your windshield... then squeeze all
that down to fit into a FOV that you can see without moving your eyes...
that is what you have in PC games. When you squeeze that 110 (or so) degrees
of FOV into the maybe 20 degrees that you are getting while looking at your
monitor.. everything looks thinner then in real life. But, when you go to
the replay you get to see the whole thing from a camera perspective which
doesn't then have to squeeze the human peripheral (sp again) vision down
into a smaller FOV.
Sorry if that was a wordy explanation... but hey, I know some other guys (no
names mentioned I swear) would have written a novel about it :-)
: When racing, the track seems to be very narrow compared to watching the
race
: on the replay. I have experimented with this carefully and I can't help
but
: conclude that the track must be much narrower (or the cars are bigger)
: during the race. The scale seems to be correct in the replay.
:
: Maybe it's an illusion, but I don't think so. What do you guys think?
