The pole position in 1967 was set by Jimmy Clark at 169.8 mph,  8'04.1 min.

The pole in 1976, the last F1 race held at the Ring, was set by James Hunt at
7'06.5, 192.7 mph, in damp conditions as I recall.

The fastest pole I could find was by Niki Lauda in 1975 at 6'58.6 min,
196.4mph.

Check the forix site for all the F1 stats you could ever need!

I'm not sure about the absolute track record for the Nurburgring, but it can't
be too much faster than Lauda's time from '75. I'd be interested to know what
the 956 Porsches were able to do in the early 80's before they stopped racing
there.

In the 1983 sportscar race, Stephan Bellof went round in 6m 25.91s
(120.75mph), driving a Porsche 956. That was in the race as far as I know so
pole will have been faster still.

Richard,

Of course you are right, it is kph and not mph, my goof.

Check out this very cool track map of the Ring put together by a BMW Club in
Germany (thanks to B. Brown for this link):

It should give us fans of GPL something to study this summer!

Gee, you must be good Julian and mightily respected too for no one to have roasted you
yet. The "track for the "Ring"" is the ***y Nurburgring, now ain't it! :)))
