-With the earpieces, helmet, radio, and the sound of your OWN engine....Can the
modern F1 driver really hear the other cars?

I think you'll get 50% "yes they can!" and 50% "no they can't!"
answers...

If you can hear a crowd, I'm sure you can hear an F1 engine roaring past
your ear...
Yes. I read a comment from one of the F1 drivers a few years ago
that they listened carefully for the downshift of the drivers in front
of them when it's raining. They see very little when they follow the
other cars, but know that's it's time to brake for the upcoming corner
when they hear the guy in front downshift.
When you can hear the downshift of other cars you can definitely
hear that other cars are near you.

Not as clear as you can in most sims, but I expect you would hear some
muffled sounds and not dead silence as in GP3.

In 1996 at Japan, when Berger nearly ran into Hill at the last corner,
Hill commented at the end of the race that it was the first time he
had ever heard another car while in the***pit - so it must have been
damn close.

Hello All,
well, i hope i can write it down that all can read and understand it.
IMO it is possible, that a driver can hear downshift from a Car infront.
When you drive your own engine at highspeed, you can hear diffrence, when
another car downshift in front. When both cars are drive full speed you have
two engine noises (frequences) and both will give another (new) frequence. I
think, the driver will hear the diffrence, when another car comes up.
Thats only my opinion.

And I think it is lazy coding..... (I can understand the lack of sound
of other cars while in your own***pit... but from tv replays?)

Not only for awareness, but for immersion... For the hard-core purists,
give the user the option of fine tuning how loud/soft/on/off the other
car sounds are.
