Weird graphics anomolies at 'dega in N4 with V5.

Weird graphics anomolies at 'dega in N4 with V5.

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed strange graphics anomolies while
driving the Talladega track in N4? It's the only track that I have noticed
this effect so far... basically the tar patches on the track surface seem to
shimmer or almost hover above the track surface and after a couple of AI
cars wrecked in front of me in turn 4 the skid marks seem to be suspended in
mid air and I was driving under them. I have my V5 5500 running the latest
drivers (Driver Rev. 1.04.01 with the x3dfx driver installed dated
31/01/01... I did follow the advice on the 3D Spotlight's V4/5 Tweak Guide
to backup 3dfxvs.dll because of problems with the x3dfx D3D driver.) and I

45 to 60 fps using the built in frames counter in N4... if fluctuates
depending upon how many cars are around me and where I am on the track but
it never drops below the 40's.
The rest of my system that is pertinent:
1.2 Ghz. Athlon
Abit KT7A-Raid
3dfx V5 5500
2 X 128 Mb SpecTek SDRAM
30 Gig IBM Deskstar ATA100
SBLive!
Win98SE

If anyone else has noticed this I would appreciate any tips or fixes that
may have been discovered. I have my V5's driver optimised using the
suggestions in the tweak guide at 3D Spotlight and I have never seen this
kind of effect in any other sim or at any other track in N4.
TIA,
Robin

GPL does the "hovering skid mark" thing occasionally too. It happens on most
tracks but is most noticeable at Bristol (converted from N3).

(I bring GPL into this N4 discussion because N4 uses a similar engine to
GPL, not because I'm a GPL nut - which I am...)

Okay, so I haven't been dedicating as much time to GPL since I purchased N4
as I should have. I haven't noticed the "hovering skid mark" anomolie in GPL
to this point and I've only tried the speedways in N4 to date... as I stated
earlier 'dega was the first track where I noticed it. I was wondering if
this phenomenon is isolated to 3dfx products or do the Nvidia cards exhibit
this same behavior? Just curious at this point... I guess I can live with it
but it is distracting... very distracting. I think I just found an excuse
for bad laps at 'dega!! ;)

I've seen them as well on my GeForce 2MX.

I have an ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder and have NOT seen this.  I am running in
Direct 3D rather than Open GL as it seems to work best for me.

"hovering skid mark"

I'm sorry. I just quit laughing long enough to point out this
possible race-fan related euphemism for a fart.

"Geesh Tom, that hovering skid mark you just laid was a doozy!"
"Someone get a match, I just laid about six feet of hovering skid mark"

hehe
