By disabling the vsynch to the monitor you can get framerate improvements.
Since I hadn't heard about it I figured there may be others amongst you who
also hadn't so I thought I'd post the info.
After reading a post at the High Gear RC forum which said that disabling the
vsynch improved framerates, I downloaded a utility called Voodoo 3 Tweaker
v2.5 from http://www.racesimcentral.net/;The home page for the
utility is at www.voodoo-now.com, a site which is in French, unfortunately
for a non-speaker like me. The utility allows you to make all sorts of
changes to Voodoo settings including overclocking as well as disabling the
vsynch. Since I'm not brave I decided not to overclock the card.
Once I'd disabled the vsynch for both DirectX and Glide, I noticed big
improvements in framerate. I can now run RC at 1024x768 and got an
improvement in framerate of about 25-30% over what I was getting at 800x600.
I'm now getting a framerate of between 35-50fps using the bumper cam at
1024x768. On the Port Hamilton stage (SS1 of Ulster rally) which I've found
gives the worst framerates, I don't get less than 28fps. I can even run the
in-car view at 800x600 with a framerate of between 25-33fps when previously
I was getting 16-23fps at 640x480. RC now looks gorgeous! I've also
noticed an improvement in N3 and GPL.
For your info, my system is as follows:
P2 400, 128Mb RAM, 256Mb fixed swap file (Norton Speed Disk optimised),
Voodoo 3 2000, LWFF, CH Pedals.
I hope this helps someone else to improve their framerate as well. If
anyone else has any quick and easy tweaking tips they would be appreciated.
Cheers
Phil
