M$ FF Wheel problem.

by Mick » Mon, 14 May 2001 01:22:12

Hello all ...

I have a USB M$ FF Wheel, perfect condition.

I haven't used it for a while but have decided to get GPL up and running
on my machine.

I plug in the wheel, load the software (Sidewinder v3.02) but the machine
refuses to see the wheel. All I get is a HID Joystick (shown connected).
After installation, in the Game controller panel I get a Feedback pro
stick showing, (as Not connected), but NO Sidewinder wheel!

I have two USB ports on my machine. Using them are a Phillips ToUCam Pro
webacm and a M$ Intellimouse. I can uninstall the *** software and
move the mouse to a PS/2 port but my machine still fails to recognise my
wheel.

The wheel does work .... in the calibration section of the stick my
machine **thinks** is connected, the movements of the wheel do show up.

The soundcard is an SBLive, (Full).

This wheell **used** to work fine.

Has anyone any ideas?

Cheers

Well, seams to me that you are trying to use wrong software version. If
I remember correctly Sidewinder software v3.02 is for M$FF game port
version only.  USB version of M$FF needs SideWinder software v4.0 ->

Correct. And when you install that software it will ask for the Win9x
cdrom to install some other stuff for USB controller. It should still
be recognized even without the Sidewinder software installed though.
It was on my Win98 system.

Mick have you ever installed the Colin McRae 2 demo or full game? That
overwrites the Windows system file responsible for wheel input (hid.dll I
think) and means your Sidewinder wheel will not get recognised. I'll try and
dig out the posts detailing how to restore the original hid.dll if you
like.....?

Cheers
Jim

Thx for reminding me of that. I have to reinstall CM2.0 and just
backed up my hid.dll from windows\system\ so that I can restore it
after installing CM2.0.

It should be on the cdrom that came with your wheel. v4.0 is only
distributed with the hardware that needs it. Maybe contact MS and say
you lost your cdrom and they will send you a copy.

As you already guessed I haven't got the CD (bought my wheel
secondhanded). Is there really no site where I can download the
software? Or would you (or someone else) email it directly to me (if
it's less than 10MBs in size)?

I could contact MS but I fear that it might take allmost forever for
them to send me another CD ;-(

TIA

If I can act the expert now ... (as if??) ... v4 is for USB connected
controllers. V3.02 is for gameport connected controllers. If you have a
USB version of a Sidewinder you should have got a CD with it with the v4
drivers.

I did, but fool that I am .... forgot!  So much for the sheer power of
the human brain eh?

Hi Mick,

I have the USB-version, but I have bought the wheel secondhanded and
didn't get the CD. I would appreciate it if someone would email me the
drivers (if it's less than 10MBs in size) or point me to a site where
I can download it.

TIA

Sorry, but it's over 20mb and if I was to do that then I would be
breaking the MS license agreement too. Contact the person you bought
it from and ask where the driver cdrom is. If you can't contact
him/her then you will have to contact MS.
