What else to increase frame rate?

by Tom Hayde » Fri, 21 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I'm trying to get my frame rate up.

I have a 100MHz Gateway, 2MB STB Trio 64V+ (S3 chipset) video, and
originally, 16MB RAM. I added 16 MB more RAM, but can't really say it
helped a lot. I can run smooth with the textured road and cars on, (and
most everything else off) but it gets a little choppy with lots of traffic
(or any other graphic turned on.)

Comments on what's next? Better drivers (video, not human), video card
(thinking about the Sierra deal), or what?

You didn't say for which sim...?

If you are talking about Nascar 2...

Adding more ram will actually make it worse. You are now using 8bit cars
instead of the 4bit cars. (this is supposed to be changeable in the
upcoming patch)

A Verite based card will help. I have the Intergraph.

Try turning the road texture off.

Buy a new computer. (I know this is not an option for most of us, but it
is inevitable).

That is true only for the Rendition executable. "Normal" video cards
use the same car set regardless of RAM available.

Yes it will (a surprising amount)

This and grass off will generally improve the frame rate quite a bit
(and I personally don't miss them)

The other thing is to ensure that you've loaded VESA 2.0 drivers for
your video card (either from a driver from the card manufacturer, or
by using UniVBE (run UVCONFIG.EXE in your NASCAR2 directory))

If you're trying to run through win95 on your machine, don't.  Get a
good clean DOS boot and run from there, until you can pick up a faster
processor.  You'll see a noticeable improvement.

Another option would be to use the newest version of the SciTech Display
Doctor (use only the uvconfig.exe in the N2 dir)...This utility supports
most
of the cards made (including Rendition, ATI Mach, etc), and is perhaps the
best $35 bucks you could spend on your system.  You can download it at:

I just got a Screamin 3d, and it's working great, I love i, but I was
wondering:
Do I now have the equivalent of a VESA 2.0 driver, and should I use
UniVBE?
I tried it in DOS and it said I had and Oak video card and Sir Tech
didn't have a compatible driver so no changes were made. Are you
familiar with this?
I'm normally not to bad at figuring out tech issues, but somehow the
video drivers thing gets me totally lost ;).

The Rendition cards have on-board VESA 2.0, so UniVBE is no longer
needed.
