Not actually. I have a TNT (1) running on a PII 350 overclocked to 392 and
the performance is great.

What CPU/motherboard are you using to do this?!?!

"The magical mystery tour is coming to take you away."
Do you have the OpenGL patch?
Go to www.papy.com and look for it. Once you have it installed, select
OpenGL from the menu.
There is some info in the README file that explains how to minimize
the problem with flashing mirrors that occurs with the TNT cards.
Don't believe Mr. Pants. The game runs OK with a TNT 1.

My point was that the game was built for a different set of video
protocols and that the Open GL patch is not all that impressive.
Especially not when compared to the performance possible with games
built from the ground up for D3D.

ok, i had to reduce the mirror refresh rate, but is this really such a big
problem?
The game runs perfect on my machine.
No use buying another videocard just for GPL
I have 36 FPS in 1024x768
I use ASUS P2B
128 MB Ram
ASUS TNT1 (!!) - overclocked
Only the start gives a lower framerate (20FPS)

It is my experience that the combination of a TNT 1 and a PII-300 is
just not enough for GPL. (The CPU might be OK, but not with that
video card.) So, I'll either wait until I have the horsepower to
experience GPL as something other than a slideshow or I will spend my
time enjoying all the more current motorsport alternatives that don't
require quite so much brute force. Like, for example, NFS: PU.

I've got a PII 266, and when I attempted to run it with my STB Velocity 4400
16 meg AGP card, I could only get the chase view to work, and at that with
graphics turned down to about 1/2 level, no mirrors or***pit features
whatsoever, and running with a full field of 19 cars I could only get around
15 fps in traffic.
Running all alone I could get 26-30 fps, which for this challenging of a
game just doesn't cut it.
I added a Voodoo II 12 meg and volia! That did the trick, so unless your
TNT1 is on a kick but system, like a PIII 700+ system, with no less than 128
meg of ram you'll be dissapointed.
> And how does its running on a TNT 2 help someone with a TNT 1?
Yes of course it was built for 3dfx cards but the openGL patch works
fine. I was trying to save the guy some money. He can run GPL with the
system he already has. There are plenty of folk who have nightmares with
voodoo cards and GPL too judging by the number of posts in here.

What kind of system does your friend have? I'll bet it's better than
a PII-300. I think others here have stated that a TNT card is OK as
long as you have lots and lots of CPU behind it.
I don't remember him saying what system he has. If he has a system
like mine (TNT1. PII-300) he's not going to have much luck.
Trying to save him some money is laudable. Even so, it's been my
experience that there are some things one cannot do on the cheap. It
might actually be less expensive, in terms of cost and time ("Once
you've downloaded and applied the patch, you can begin editing the
CORE.INI file....") to buy a low-end voodoo card rather than trying to
fiddle a TNT into behaving itself, especially on a slower system.
No question! <g> Voodoo no longer seems like a mainstream card. And
GPL seems more and more like a brilliant and finicky orphan. Keeping
it going as systems and system standards continue to evolve feels a
bit like keeping any rare vehicle roadworthy. For those who've come
to love it, all the effort is amply rewarded. For those who've come
to the party late, getting everything to work can be something of a
challenge.
