Friends,

Can I get decent framerate with a Geforce or TNT2 card? 25+ ....
How does it look, better than a V3?
Is OpenGL supported by Papyrus at all?
Thanks,

Martin.

The answer is no. You cannot get a descent framerate with cards that do not
support Glide. The OpenGL patch (beta, not supported by Papyrus or Sierra)
is an improvement compared to software mode, but still not as good as any
old Voodoo based card.

I recently upgraded from Voodoo Banshee to Geforce Pro. That was throwing
good money away. The Voodoo Banshee outperformed the Geforce Pro in GPL.

With the Geforce Pro I can get 16-36 FPS in 800x600 (in car view), and
stable 36 FPS in chase view. I've turned off some of the details, and
lowered the mirror updating frequency (they are useless anyhow without a
3Dfx-card). I haven't noticed any desireable difference in picture quality.
If there is any, it isn't enough to compensate for the lack of mirrors and
FPS.

If your main interest is GPL, stick to Voodoo cards. Voodoo cards may not
give you 90+FPS in Unreal Tournament, but it enables you to play GPL with no
trouble whatsoever.

Unreal Tournament!?

Just today I tested...

A PIII 450 (boosted to 600) 128 MB and GeForce 256 gave average 40 fps
(Deathmatch Morpheus map singleplayer 11 bots 1024*768 terrain on med and
16bit palette)...

While a PII Celeron (clocked to 450) 128 MB and V32000 16mb pushed 50fps
with the lowest point at 26fps... same settings...

Tell me am I doing something wrong?
Quake 3 is another story though....

Not true.  My Hercules Thriller (Rendition) out performs V2 in SLI with GPL by
about an average of ten FPS.  The rendition also looks better then the V2's.

Sounds a lot more likely than "gotta do Voodoo" ... wasn't GPL optimized
for Rendition in the first place? Doesn't seem likely that all those
people who were getting good performance and framerates with Rendition
cards when GPL was first released would have suffered some major
degradation in performance in the meantime...

AFAIK this is only true in a CPU limited situation. As available processor
cycles increase, the FPS advantage of the Rendition cards goes away. I'm
running a 400 mhz Celeron with V3 card, and get 36 fps everywhere but the
start-finish line, with only mirror textures turned off, and only cars
visible in the mirrors.

You'll want to put that Voodoo1 back in for GPL. I can't imagine that GPL
would even get 1 fps with a 1M Trident card! With the Voodoo1 you may get
something that you can play around with a bit

Meg Trident card, yes i ran out of money. I don't have enough $ to get a

drive much faster than with voodoo2 (you can even see which curbs are
flat!).  see newsgroup about using 353+ drivers and buffer flip mode to
correct uglyness on mirrors and flashing.
