I agree with you, that it is the most popular "current" F1 game. I'm not
sure how big a following GPL has (other than here in r.a.s. of course).
I've played the demo to OF1 by Eidos, and MGPRS2 will probably remain the
most popular F1 game.

Hi F1RS.com site went over a million in less than a year with a higher daily
average. MGPRS2.com started this fall and has an average of over 2,000 a day
which still puts it on track for 730,000 for the year.

The same way I would know if I liked role playing games or not.
It doesn't interest me.

Never tried the demo.

Ah that's the correct word.  "interest".  Your missing something, still.
The most advanced racing simulator ever ;)

Ouch never tried the demo ? Blasphemy :-)

It would have been higher, except most Americans don't have MGPRS2.

If you don't think MGPRS2 is the most popular "current" F1 sim, what do you
think is? I don't think the "mass market" would think GP2 is "current" as it
has no 3D support.
There are only a couple of "current" F1 sims availible, (F1RS, MGPRS2, OF1,
and F1-97, and F1-98, am I missing any?). Out of those, clearly MGPRS2 is
the most popular.

It's not a matter of which is best, GP2 was probably a better sim for it's
time than MGPRS2.

And it still won't look as good as MGPRS2.

Gp2 is still in the top5 sellers up here, even with Ubisoft based in our
city (Montreal).  The mass market is mostly made of Americans, so you can
eliminate MGPRS2.  Of course you will say the "but it's not out there yet"
argument.  Irrevelant.

Remember that the mass market mostly has no Internet access, and also
doesn't have a 3d card (even D3D compatible).  Gp2 is their choice.  Or Psy
F1-97.

Uh sorry, but still arcade games sell more than sims.  F1-97 by Psygnosis is
one of the only multi-million sold game, if you consider PSX sales.... it's
the most popular F1 "sim".

So what the heck are we arguing here ? People say MGPRS2 is the best and
base that on facts like website hits and #of title sold.  I just replied
saying "no that's not a good argument".  So please re-read the whole thread
<g>.

Actually it also depends on the graphics card as well. I.e. a good
SVGA like an ATI with Mach32 or something like that will raise
framerate significantly compared to a simple Trident or a Rendition
based board. I know from experience...:)
Don't know how the TNT performs under SVGA though.

Yes, and I have the world's most popular Panda-shaped Dung-Buddy sitting on
my porch right now.  That doesn't necessarily mean my dung-buddy is of any
particular quality.

Really. Where (exactly) are you getting your info from?

Do you actually believe this with all the new computers being sold
in the past 2 years???

Unfortunately this is a good point.

This discussion is enlightening (believe it or not).

IMHO.

Sadly nothing changes the fact that GP2 is 3 years old and still the best
F1 racing simulation ever created. As was recently mentioned in a magazine,
it has something for everyone from beginners to experts. Okay it may have
been a little "hungry" when it was created and is a little old looking now
but it is still a great sim.

The thing about GP2 over MGP and it's older brother is that they both force
concentration on driving, not racing. Personally I never felt I had to
spend too much time worrying about how to drive GP2 I just tried to work
out where I was faster than cars in front in order to get close and pass.
MGP is the opposite. If I can get close I can pass but I have to worry
about exactly how I'm driving rather than how my race is going.

I have spent hundreds of hours on GP2 and a handful on MGP because if I
want to have a driving sim I play GPL.

Quite true- but i prefer MGPRS2 for the opposite. The car's are a lot more
nervous, and it is harder to drive than gp2. it's all too easy to nip out and
lap quickly in GP2 and then relax, whereas in MGPRS2 i find relaxing is
impossible during a race.

Likewise, it's interpretation of Qualifying is for my mind, the best in any
sim avaliable anywhere.

MGPRS2 vs GP2

Obviously most people in rec.autos.simulators have played GP2 a lot a few
years ago and are tired to it. But I just want to note, that there are still
lots of people just discovering the game and learning to love and enjoy it.

The most entertaining thing in my life is currently GP2 racing with full
length competitions, following the calendar of official IRL F1, and
impersonating as my fellow countryman Mika H?kkinen. I use some up-to-date
driver, car and track mods you can get from gp2.com.

One of the most amazing things in GP2 is, that the different levels of
competitiveness among the computer controlled cars and player car(s) are
very realistic, in a mysterious way. For example, in the Brazil race I
passed Scumacher just three laps before the end and won.

Note that I get to enjoy this a little everyday, because I usually save the
game after some 15 minutes to 30 minutes of racing. So I race one 1,5 hour
F1 race during the weeks between the IRL races, in several sessions in
different days.

Additionally, at race days we often play a multiplayer game at my house,
starting exactly at the same time as in television. It is major fun! If
there are several players, you get to watch most of the game in TV, even
though you are racing with GP2.
