I had a problem with a SoundBlaster Live card and GPL running under Windows
XP - crackling sound and pauses or stutters in the game even when I was
getting 36 fps. Getting the latest SoundBlaster drivers cured the crackling
but not the pauses. The only thing that fixed that was going into the Sounds
and Audio Devices control panel and turning Hardware Acceleration (under
Advanced | Performance) all the way down. Problem solved! GPL is as smooth
as a baby's bottom again. Others report they achieved smoothness after
turning Hardware Acceleration down a notch or two - I had to go all the way
off.
Seems Windows XP has exposed a deep rooted bug in the Live drivers that
affects some games coded for non-current versions of DirectX (EAW flight sim
had same problem; cured same way).
