In a mail list for one of my leagues someone else said that a chip that wasn't
running to it's full speed would be listed at the speed it *ran*.  Meaning,
that if my CPU had be 'throttled' by the motherboard, it would show a lower
speed in any speed test.  The speed test provided by another league member
showed the thing *is* running at 1.2g.
As far as formats - I put a totally clean drive in it over the weekend to test
with a fresh install.  No difference.  I couldn't imagine formatting every
three months.  That would be a pain in the ass...
You actually backup, format, and reinstall that often?  Yow...

But anyway, I'm still left with a mystery of why things aren't working the way
they SHOULD be.  All the settings check, the CPU checks at its rated speed, but
games run a lot slower than they should.  Defective video card, maybe?  How
would I be able to test that without having a spare one of the same model for
comparison?

Remember Eldred,  AMD runs at a slower clockspeed than Intel cpu's.  so
the 1800XP+ really is more like a 1.53 instead of 1.8mghz. They use the
higher number to advertise their chip compared to similar Intel chips.

You can also check the BIOS messages upon booting. For instance, if I
decided to lower FSB speed from 133 to 100 MHz (or whatever), the
Athlon XP+ 2400 in my box will happily be reported as an 1800XP+ or
something. Up the FSB speed, and it's back to 2400+.

This is also a good way of keeping a chip cool and make it consume
less power (for a router or whatever), just "underclock" it.

Cheers,

uwe

The CPU shows on startup as an Athlon 1.2, so that's right.
Argh...  I dunno anymore.
