pedals for driving and flight sims?

by Mark Kna » Thu, 12 Sep 2002 17:32:01

I'd like to get rudder pedals for a flight sim, but am also looking at
wheels/pedals for driving sims.  Can most be used for both?  Any
recommendations for good ones for $75-150?  Thanks for any advice.

I have FS2000, Red Baron 2, European Air War, JF4, and would like to
get a rally sim; system is PIII 550, 512MB RAM, Geforce 2 64MB video,
running Win98.

No, most cannot be used for both. You want the CH Pro pedals. They're the
only ones that'll do you for both. $100 over the counter. Available in most
EB stores. $70.15 at buy.com

I used my Logitech wingman formula force pedals for rudders in IL-2
Sturmovik and a few other games, i just have to make sure the pedals are
combined and not on a split axis

I actually like the CH non-pro pedals better, they work great for both.

I like the CH regular pedals too... they're cheap and very precise, although
the geometry is totally different from a car so it takes some getting used
to, but it works well for aircraft sims as well.  One of my coworkers took
some CH pedals, flipped them 180 degrees and bolted them to a wedge made of
plywood to make them top-hinged, and put an extra spring/squashball under
the brake--with it against the wall, it felt very solid and car-like, for
maybe ten bucks of parts and probably at most an hour of labor. (I think he
ended up also bolting on metal toe plates on the ends of the pedals.)

I got me a couple of Thrustmaster Elite rudder pedals for the flight sims
aside from the steering wheel & pedals. As others have mentioned, only
the CH pedals can be used with both racing and flight sims, and they're
more like rudder pedals than car ones. I also got a box called a "JoySwitch"
that allows up to 4 different joysticks/wheels and 2 sets of pedals to be
hooked to it and then manually selected by you (like a DataSwitch used for
printers and other parallel port devices). I got the pedals for $44 from
one of those Amazon zShops, and the JoySwitch on eBay for $25. You just
have to be patient to find good items at low price (got a GeForce2 MX 32MB
card for a friend yesterday for $6.50, for instance... I wish I had got
something for myself that cheap! Oh, well, I did get that camera lens once
for $5...)

Back to the subject, the Thrustmaster Elite are something like the next-to-best
rudder pedals you can get. (The best are probably another earlier model by
Thrustmaster which has been long discontinued). Oh, those are for use with the
game port, not USB, but I believe there was a USB version too.
