Logitech FF wheel online problem

by Spar » Thu, 23 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Since I hooked up a new Logitech FF wheel yesterday, I have had a
problem staying connected online. The wierd thing is that I don't just
get disconnected from a race on VROC. My computer goes straight from the
race to reboot (or sometimes a just solid screen freeze from which I
must reboot). This also seems to happen when I try to download off the
internet. As long as the wheel its plugged in this happens seemingly at
random (sometimes after a few laps, sometimes at the first corner). Also
this happens only if I'm racing or downloading, I can browse e-mail with
no problem. If I unplug the wheel, everything works fine (except I can't
race, so things are far from fine).
My connection is by cable modem and at first I thought the 2
transformers might be conflicting but it still happens with transformers
plugged into different circuits. Has anyone had any similar situations
or have any tips?......I'm out of ideas.
I have all the latest drivers from Logitech and directx7a.

Thanks,
Spark

One thing I didn't try that appears to solve the problem, at least
temporarily, is to connect the wheel via the serial port instead of the USB
port. This was my 1st device connection through USB so I guess I need to
investgate.

Serial ports and peripherals that demand a lot of information sent to and from each seem to conflict. I have been able to reproduce multiple instances of serial port conflicts for multiple problems... but honestly I have no been able to find a solution. Theoretically the serial ports should not conflict with each other (since they occupy separate IRQs) but they seem to do so diligently without reason. In fact I asked Microsoft themselves why they did not port their MSFF wheel to serial ports instead of the taxing gameport, and they stated the same thing (if the designers of the OS don't know... we're screwed).

Your best bet is to leave the serial ports alone and try to avoid them whenever possible. I wish I had a definitive answer for you... but I don't... hope you get that PS2 mouse for X-Mas.

Oddly enough, I had problems with my USR v.90 external 56K USB voice modem when using USB and connection to my local provider.  I couldn't get my browser or email to come up without***.  I went back to using the modem via serial port (COM2) and all is fine now.  I believe the problem was that when using the modem via USB, it was assigning the modem to a newly created COM3 port.  Since I have a serial mouse connected to COM1, and COM1 and COM3 share the same IRQ, I believe that was my problem.  I asked Santa for a PS2 mouse and will try the modem on USB after switching over to PS2 mouse.
Anyone else have a better analysis of what my problem was, I'd be more than happy to hear it.
