N2002 Boot Problem

by Robert Upwar » Sat, 03 Aug 2002 14:26:27

I have been running N2002, and I keep getting booted back to the desktop
during races.  It has happened both online and offline usually in the later
stages of a race (i.e. just now online lap 19 of 24 at Indy) I had been
using an Voodoo 5 5500 video card, which gave me colour problems, but I have
recently upgraded to an Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4400. I have had the problem
both with and without "End-It-All" running.  I have a AMD Athalon 800, with
128 Ram, running Win 98.  Any suggestions?

Robert,

Sounds like a cooling problem to me, To verify it run a nice long
race with the systems cover removed and a fan blowing right onto
the motherboard. If this works ok then you know you need better
ventilation through you're case or maybe a better CPU heatsink/fan
cooler solution.
Also intermittent RAM could cause a problem like this, turn off
fast startup in you're bios to let the motherboard do a thorough
test on startup. Maybe find some memory test software on the
web.

PS:  Blow all the dust bunnies out of you're system while you're at it :)

Good luck to ya ...

Robert....

We really need more information, as in:

1.  Win98?  or Win98SE?  (How fresh is this install?)
2.  What driver version for the vid card (is the vid card AGP or PCI)?
3.  What sound card (and driver version)?
4.  What N2K2 res and settings?
5.  Have you made all the recommended .ini file settings?
6.  How much video replay ram have you allocated?
7.  Is your swap file defragmented?
8.  Have you taken control of  "Virtual Memory" back from Windows?
9.  What mobo BIOS settings are you using (recommended set for Nv cards or
not)?
10. What are your N2K2 "Options Screen" settings for sound, graphics?
11. What controller are you using?
12. Have you installed DX8.1 or tried reinstalling it?

Robert, provide the answers to these questions and I'm sure, collectively
someone will come up with the right answer for you.  I bet the "problem"
lies somewhere in these 12 areas.  Also, 128mb of ram is not nearly enough
ram for even normal ops of Win98(SE).  256 is a minimum, 512 is much better.
Your system may simply be *** on too little ram.  Do you manage your ram
allocation with a program like MemTurbo?  If not, go get it.

Regards,

Tom

Wow!   Thanks DB, Gerald, and Tom for your help.  I already checked the
memory and it's ok, plus I opened the tower and used a fan, but I still got
the same prob.  I'll get my buddy, the self described "computer geek" to try
this stuff and tell you what happens.

"Upgrading" from a V5 to an nVidia based card is not always the
smoothest of rides, just ask Dave Henrie, I myself had a momentary brain
fade a little while ago and popped in a GF4MX card to hold me over until
my R8500 card arrived as I thought the V5 really wasn't up to the task
of NR2002 and had nothing but lockups and such

There was nothing wrong with the card as I sold to someone else who is
quite happy with it, and it was basically nothing wrong with my computer
as my R8500 works flawlessly, and others have reported similar findings,
I can only assume there's some stuff from V5 drivers that gets left
behind and won't work properly when you pop in an nVidia based card

I did the full uninstall and regedit thing, still locked up on me,
popped the V5 back in and no worries, same with the R8500, so if you
have a spare disk lying around that you could do a test install of a
clean W98 and see if the same thing happens there

Beers and cheers
