FF Wheels - any up to date comparisons?

by Dave Del Signor » Fri, 31 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

I've been digging around Dejanews looking for info on the latest force
feedback wheels.  I've found lots of information, but I'm having a bit of a
time coming to some conclusion on which wheel might suit me best.  I've also
noticed that some of the critiques of the wheels are somewhat out of date,
as the manufacturers have updated their offerings.  Lastly, most online
reviews do not offer any relative comparisons between units.  Unfortunately
I live in a small city where I can only get my hands on a Microsoft FF unit
for testing, so I'd appreciate some feedback from r.a.s on the units I'm
considering:

Act Labs RS Force  -  $155 shipped
Guillemot Ferrari Force  -  $131 shipped
Logitech Wingman Formula Force - $120 shipped

I already have a set of CH Pedals.

I primarily race:
GPL
SCGT
F1RS

Here are some specific questions to which I have not been able to find
answers:

RS Force:
1.  I understand the shifting paddles have been improved.  Are they now as
good as the other offerings on the list?  Does the fact that they are one
piece detract from their utility?
2.  I understand that the pedals can now be setup on separate axes.  Are
there any software driver issues that are still outstanding?
3.  In her review, Alison Hines complains that subtle FF effects in GPL are
difficult to discern in this unit, as compared to the Logitech unit.  Is
this generally regarded as true?  Is this a drawback to this unit in other
sims as well?
4.  I read that the pedals are great.  Are they better than my CH pedals?

Guillemot:
1.  Some reviewers complain that the pedals are flimsy looking.  How well do
the pedals hold up?
2.  I've read that this unit is not as accurate as the other two.  How
noticeable is this?
3.  How good are the pedals, compared to the RS?  My CH pedals?

Formula Force:
1.  Early reviews indicated that this unit had relatively weak FF effects.
However, software updates have resolved this problem to a certain extent.
Is the problem completely resolved, or is the Formula still a little too
weak?
2.  I understand that the Formula is the smoothest of the three units
listed.  How does its accuracy compare?
3.  I understand that build quality is an issue with this unit, more than
the other two.  Has that problem been resolved?

If there's any other information that would be helpful, please pass it
along.  Thanks in advance for the help.
