F1 2001, 1 problem solved, a new one raises it's ugly head !

Could some kind peron help me find a solution to my problem ? :)

When I first installed F1 2001 on my Athlon 750 with GeForce 2 Pro
everything ran quite well except for the pedals which were a bit insensitive
and a lack of CPU grunt.
So I bought a new PC, Athlon 1.2 GHz with GeForce 3. Out on track and great,
the pedals seem to work properly at last :) I continued for a lap or 2  when
it just crashed back to desktop. This happens with all the drivers I tried
(21.81, 12.90, 12.41 and 11.01)
I then tried putting the GeForce 2 back in with the 12.90 drivers (which
worked on my Athlon 750) still the same problem. With some drivers I also
got graphics corruption when starting a quick race, any other race type was
ok though.

I tried running in windowed mode and also running FRAPS but no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas ?

BTW, both systems are listed below

Gigabyte GA71XE MB
256MB RAM
GeForce 2 Pro
SB Live 1024
Realtek NIC card
AVM (BT speedway) ISDN card

AMD Athlon 1.2
AbitKT7A MB (VIA 4in1 drivers version 432
256MB RAM
GeForce 3
SB Live 1024
Realtek NIC card
AVM (BT Speedway) ISDN card, now changed to a multitech ISDN card.

Nothing besides the Athlon 50 is overclocked and the CPU and system temp
seems pretty good 26, 45

Only difference I can think of is the CPU and MB, so can that be the problem
and is there a fix?

since you are getting it running and THEN it crashes...it sounds like
something other than drivers.
Check for the temperature your cpu is running at.  A 1.2 should be around
52c or less.  Check that your new system isn't sharing abunch of irq's for
the soundcard, vid card and the like.
good luck tracking this down.
ps...desktop set to the same display characteristics as the game??
i.e. 16bit color and the same screen res..

I agree, I believe it is the KT7A.

If you can try disconnecting the CD drive and testing it. There seem to be
some issues with the bus mastering drivers on this board & CD drives.

There is a ton of stuff on this board here:

Hope it helps

Did you just put the old HDD with windows on the new PC? To avoid
having to reinstall windows but allow it to locate all the new
hardware, etc., delete the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Enum (which
removes all the entires below it). On reboot, Windows will recognise
all the new hardware and new drivers for them.

The other culprit is most likely your BIOS settings for the Abit
board. Check your AGP settings, try removing AGP 4x, altering the AGP
aperature, etc.

When I find a noCD patch I'll try that.

Thanks

I think you're right ;)

It's running at about 45c, as I said in my admittedly long post ;)

Check that your new system isn't sharing abunch of irq's for

I tried installing win ME after the original install of 98SE gave me
crashes, a few IRQs were shared but nothing too serious. I think something
went totally *tits up* with the ME install as I was having some serious
lockups, DUN taking ages to come up and not even N4 would run.
I gave up and did a clean install of 98SE. Everything seems ok now, USB and
ISDN card share an IRQ but thats all. I still get crashes in F1 2001 though,
but they are far less and there is no graphics corruption anymore :)

I think I'll need it <G>

Yes it is.

Thanks
Ian P

No, it was a complete system with an OS installed, I bought it off a friend
and everything works (ed) fine before but he didn't have F1 2001

To avoid

Thanks, a nice tip to know, even if I don't need it on this occasion .

Already tried that, no go. But as I pointed out in my reply to Dave Henrie,
it's now running a lot better under a clean install of 98SE ;)

Thanks
Ian P
