F1RS runs great on Voodoo 2!

by Ken » Wed, 04 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Well it finally arrived. Received the CL Blaster Voodoo 2 today from
EbWorld. Installed very easily. F1RS had an error upon startup saying
that " the Voodoo card failed to initialize," so I went into explorer
and found the f1voo.exe file and ran it from there. Before, I was
running the Canopus Pure 3d and had the typical first turn slowdown in
F1RS, even on a PII-300. It wasn't terrible...maybe 15 fps for a few
seconds, before bouncing back to 30+.  With the Voodoo 2 however, the
slowdown is gone. Silky smooth framerates...guessimate 50+ fps, who
knows since everything over 30 is smooth anyway. I'd guess 50 fps
average though, simply because there is NO slowdown, even with all
competitors on the track at once. If it was only averaging 30-40,  then
when it bottomed out the framerate with all the cars at once, the eye
would detect it. The only drawback is the funky purple lettering around
the text. It doesn't affect the game environment though... so big deal!

Needless to say, awesome card!

F1RS runs great on Voodoo 2!

Congrats on the V2! I too got my card last week and was dting to see
how F1RS ran on the V2 and it is quit nice, aint it! It was a pleasure to
come down the hill at Monaco, heading towards the 180 degree left hander at
the start of the race with all of the competition behind you and no
slowdown! Just out of curiosity Ken, have you done some tweaking around on
F1rs yet? Like in your sound settings and your Vcache setting to increase
framerate? If you havent drop a note and I'll give you a rundown of some
things to do and not to do in the game. For example, people including my
self have seen a drop in framerate after installing the latest patch from
Ubisoft - v1.07. The game actually runs faster with the old patch!

Ken, if you want to see some crazy framerates, run F1RS in 'Time
Attack' mode. Talk about silky, silky smoooth framerates! Kinda like
watching a movie!

Have you heard that Ubisoft is coming out with F1RS II? Haven't heard
a lot of details on this one though. Another one from Ubi I'm looking
forward to is Redline Racer. The graphics look beutifull and they're
claiming 60 fps on the original Voodoo1 chipset! Can't wait to see it on
the V2.

There will be a demo of Redline Racer, I saw the demo page on the
site and once again, no details on the date of the relelase.

Take Care.............

On a pII-300 without Voodoo2 it runs slow in the first corner???
This must be a sign of terrible coding by ubisoft.

On your system everything must run great :-)

Well, I think Ubisoft was primarely shooting for people with 3dfx cards. The
reality is, the original 3dfx boards are so reasonably affordable now that
who wouldn't pick one up;) Do you have a Voodoo2 in your system? I doesnt
surprise me that your see slowdowns at the start of a race in 'Software only'
mode.

Take care!

What CPU do you have? Rumors were that you only see a
marked increase (comparing Voodoo to Voodoo2) with
Pentium 2 processors. On a normal Pentium I thought the
increase would be like 15%-20% while on a fast P2, the
increase could be 2x-3x. And then there were several flight
simulators which would not run on a Voodoo2 apparently.
Glad this isn't the case with F1RS.

My system is a P200/32edo/12meg V2/32x/17 inch(Monitor heheh). You are
correct when you mention about the comparison performance increase with the
Classic Pentium and the PII. Although the framerates are noticibly a"little'
quicker, what stuck out the most to me was the the V2 board 'sustained' the
framerates with in the game. As compared to the Monster and the framerate
dropping way down to like 15fps and then up to 30 fps with no cars around you.
The V2 balances this out nicely.........

I would love to see the Voodoo2 running F1 on a PII 333mhz system!

OK I have a 200MMX and you have put me one step closer to getting
a Voodoo2 :-)

Well, the only other step you need to take is making a decision  to
reward yourself with the Voodoo2. The way I look at is, if the 12meg gave me
this kind of performance over my Monster3d on my P200, this board WILL grow as
my system does. Meaning when I '86' this Gateway system for a PII333mhz system,
the Voodoo2 card will still not hit it's MAX performance. The card will evolve
as your system does.

This brings up a thought, I remember talking with someone at computer
covention here in Portland, and this person claims that he was getting 30-35 fps
on a certain title(Glide)with his Monster3d on his PII 300. So I say's, "thats
funny, I get the exact same framerates with my P200 system". What this say to me
is, the Monster card had hit it's maximum framerate regardless of the mhz of the
CPU. I don't see this happening with the V2.................

Wise up and belly up to the bar and reward yourself with a 12meg V2!

Software only mode? F1RS? Don't think so! It's a 4 meg and late model
D3D compatable card or nothing but blank screen!
