F1RS Voodoo install problem (V2)

by Gary Lightfoo » Sat, 18 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I had installed F1RS (directX5 version) on my machine, and it ran
fine, albeit a little slowly. I then installed Creative Labs new 8meg
Voodoo2 card with no problems, tried Quake2 and was very happy!

I then ran F1RS, and it asked me which directx (IIRC) I wanted to
use - I assume it was choosing between my Mystique 220 drivers, and
the 3dfx drivers (it never used to ask before, obviously). I chose the
one that appeared to be 3dfx and it ran ok, but I decided to uninstall
it and reinstall the voodoo version.

Unfortunately the install program says I don't have a 3dfx card, so I
can't install the voodoo version. The strange thing is, if I click the
'voodoo.exe' file on the cd, it runs the game perfectly from the cd
using the 3dfx card! The graphics are real good too...... ;o[

The other thing that might be important, is the fact that in the 3dfx
tab/system information, it says the dos glide driver version is
'unknown', so maybe it needs to see this to recognise the presence of
the card?

If all else fails, does anyone know how I can force it to install the
3dfx version, or give me a complete list of files from their install
so I can instyall it manualy.

Thanks in advance.

Gary.

Make sure these three files are in your Windows/System directory....

1.Glide2x.dll (not Glide.dll)
2.Fxmemmamp.vxd
3.Sst1init.dll

They should be on your f1rs cd.
f1rs removes them when you install the D3D version of the game, and
you need to manually replace them before it will recognise the 3Dfx
card. Also try the latest f1rs patch (v1.o8)

1)  Get the newer drivers for your card.  For some reason the drivers
that came with the Creative cards do not seem to have the DOS Glide
drivers.  Here is an URL for the RC2 drivers:
http://www.soundblaster.com/voodoo2/v2win9x.zip

2)  You should then be able to reinstall F1RS -- or just copy the
voodoo.exe file from the CD to your F1RS folder on your hard drive.

I'm embarrassed to say that after I posted here, I searched the web
for the Ubisoft site, and found an faq which said exactly that! I d/l
the zip that contains those files and everything is ok now. Great
graphics too. ;o]

I did, but didn't notice any difference ...? I guess there must be
tho'.

Thanks for your help Pete.
