Help: i have a voodoo problem! (voodoo 5)

by duhenois jean loui » Wed, 16 Jan 2002 20:46:54

I just got a new (second hand) voodoo 5 and i have a problem: in gpl , i
get a very bad frame rate.In fact, the frame rate is better ( 10 fps at
least)  with  D3d than with glide selected (2 fsaa).
I 've changed drivers (current is 1.04), reinstalled direct x, but
nothing changed.
System
celeron 400 oc to 500
Zm 6 card
128 megs

Before, i had voodoo 3 2000 and it was much better. I deisnstalled
voodoo 3 stuff with the windows control panel before installing voodoo
5.
I think it's a driver problem compatibility problem, but what to do
next???

Thanks in adavnce

What OS are you running? If it's XP, you'll have troubles I'm sure.

And I assume that when you say "with glide selected, 2fsaa" you mean
2fps. If you're trying to run with 2x fsaa then you aint going to get
a huge frame rate. Try running it at 640x480, minimum details.

Well, it's win 98. What i meant was that with the 3dfx rasterizer selected in
gpl, and the 2 X fsaa option selected in the 3dfx control tool, i have in
general a 25 FPS performance in training.
The strange thing is that when i select the D3D rasterizer in gpl, every
thing is fine (even with antialiasing at 2 X fsaa), 36 FPS solid in training
at the same rsolution!
And with my old v3, i had also 36FPS solid (but without antialiasing of
course)

I have a problem with my V5 and the glide rasterizer.
Maybe some old V3 drivers left or whatever related to that.
Is there a tool to remove all old 3dfx drivers, and clean registry and so
on??

Help: i have a voodoo problem! (voodoo 5)

I have seen this problem posted before in other groups and the overwhelming
answer was that Voodoo 3 defaults to Glide but Voodoo 5, a supposedly more
modern card, was actually designed to do better with D3d.. So even though it is
a 3dfx product it prefers D3D to the proprietary 3dfx glide...Some people even
complained or claimed that Voodoo 3 ran Glide (not necc opengl ) games better
than Voodoo 5. I dont think anything is wrong with your Voodoo 5. Look at a
Voodoo site and search for old posts and you will see what I mean.

well, thanks for this answer because i was starting to worry a little bit that the
card had a problem. I'll get a look or write an other post with this specific item.
