F1CS2K Question

F1CS2K Question

by Scott B. Huste » Tue, 17 Jul 2001 01:49:45

Hey all,

Now before I get pistol whipped and kicked in the groin, I'm not trying to
start a flame war or anything!  LOL

I know most people have a problem with F1RC due to the AI, multiplayer, etc.
I am not the worlds biggest F1 fan, so I have a question about F1CS2K as to
why it doesn't seem to be that popular among the modern F1 sim racers?   Out
of the F1 titles I have tried, It seems to be pretty good.  Especially in
comparison to GP2.1.. I mean GP"3".  ;)

Now I know If I ask ymenard, he will tell me the pebble on the third turn at
Monaco is turned 3 degrees to the left further than the actual pebble he
witnessed while watching the race and a list of other items in similar
context.   ;)

I just reloaded it last night and was doing some racing and I still thought
it was pretty decent.  So I was just curious to what 'faults' alot of you
have with it other than it being an EA title <G>.

Thanks,
Scott

I didn't like it at first either, until I used Jbodin's advanced
handling...sheesh I can't even remember what he called it now...Silverstone
was cool after that.  Going through the first set of esses with loads of
grip and at least some warning of loss of traction.  with the lwff pedals i
had back then, I was very prone to lockup on the brakes.
Once I get the Tbird back working, I'll refire f1cs

Scott I like it but I really wish who or whomever worked on SBK2001
would have done the same for F1CS2K. Since being in the commercial
graphic arts field for over 25-years I love good clean graphics with high
"fps" and for me so far I feel the 2 best are SBK2001 & N4.. jmho :-)
"O" yea GP3 is 2nd in the newer F1 era genre but it needs some work.

F1CS2K Question

by Ali Ismet Ozka » Tue, 17 Jul 2001 03:20:43

Scott,

The reason why people didn't even want to try F1CS2K is that F1 2000 was
buggy (low FPS and terrible AI) and people felt they were ripped off, so
some of them never bought F1CS2K or even tried the demo. As you remember F1
2000 was released when everybody was expecting the ultimate thing from EA
and almost everybody has tried it.

Then you have the loyal belivers of GP2 and MGPRS2, who simply can't admit
that the follow-ups can be that disappointing.

F1CS2K Question

F1CS can be a lot of fun, but compared with F1RC and GP3 it just doesn't
feel right at all as a driving experience.  The whole thing is too
forgiving, the cars feel sluggish, and just don't seem to react as you would
expect a modern F1 car to.
Plus the graphics are pretty poor although that is very much a side issue.

Doesn't really matter if you can do a 1:06 there if the fact remains it
doesn't feel like you're doing it in a F1 car.

Christopher E. Johnso

F1CS2K Question

by Christopher E. Johnso » Tue, 17 Jul 2001 05:41:35

I have both on my computer.  GP3 I can play easily on my 850, 256 RAM,
GeForce DDR system.  With With F1CS I have too turn down the number of
cars to around 10 and put them on medium or high detail in order not to
have a slide show at the beginning of the race.

That being said, I do enjoy F1CS more than GP3.  Using the MagicBox
utility opened up a whole new F1CS experience for me.  Plus F1 has more
amenities like spotters, replays, etc. and the driving school is fun.

GP3 is easier to drive to me than F1CS.  This could be because of the
"sluggish" feel issues, but on a dry course I can easily pass and do well
in GP3.  The cars (AI) in F1CS are also harder to pass and they can be
made pretty aggressive in the game.  I do, however, like the weather
effects in GP3 a lot more and that's why I still like to race it every
now and then.

I think it boils down to how much computer power you have and how you
think driving a F1 vehicle should feel.

F1CS2K Question

by Rod Princ » Tue, 17 Jul 2001 07:10:02

At least on my machine, I find that the sense of speed is poor and
it feels like I'm permanently racing on marbles, it just doesn't
seem to 'stick' to the track as I would expect.

Start of the race I have to turn mirrors off or I'll get a slide
show, yet the graphics aren't stellar. They're adequate but that's
about it.

I also have issues with FF with my LWFF wheel which may be the
reason that the car feels like it's floating all over the place.

If I didn't have F1RS then I would probably have no issues with
F1CS. I'm on the verge of overcoming my 'punting' issues with
F1CS (by cheating and giving me more brake power.. but it now
matches the AI's ability to brake).

Cheers,
Rod.

F1CS2K Question

by Ian » Tue, 17 Jul 2001 07:58:00

No I haven't raced a 2000 F1 car, but you can see clearly from TV coverage
that they don't have anywhere near the suspension movement shown (and felt)
in F1 2000 and CS. You can also see they change direction far quicker, far
more responsively than the ones modelled in the EA sims.
I have driven a sand buggy however, and F1 2000 feels oh so similar ;)
I'm not saying the other modern F1 sims are totally accurate, but they feel
more like I'd expect an F1 sim to behave.
BTW, I'm hoping to actually get a go in a modern(ish) F1 car sometime next
year, funds permitting, so if I'm wrong, I'll be the first to tell you :)

Just incase you're interested, I also haven't driven a NASCAR, but N4 seems
to model the driving very closely to what I'd expect from seeing them on TV.
IMO it's technically the best sim currently available.

I'm not being a wise azz either, just stating my opinions on the current
sims and how they feel to me.
