OT: AthlonXP; Epox BIOS; New CPU: No Luck! 8-(

by bertr » Mon, 10 Feb 2003 09:35:38

Sorry for the OT post (again), but this is driving me nuts, and I
suspect that there are some RASsers running practically the same system
as mine, so I hope that they can help me out.

According to the Epox website (on their CPU compatibility chart), I need
to flash the BIOS of my Epox 8Kha+ (Version 2.0) mobo to a BIOS dated
9/3/02, in order to install my new AthlonXP2100 CPU T'bred B.  (My
present CPU is an XP1700 Palamino).  However, the only BIOS versions
available to download are dated either 11/6/02 or 6/12/02.  So, I
figured that I need to use the later of the two (11/6/02).

Unfortunately, after successfully completing this flash, I get error
messages upon boot-up  Specifically, I get a message just before the
Windows desktop loads that says: " System memory is running very low.
Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect may not function properly."  And the
system runs like crap. Luckily the "Restore" feature of the BIOS
flashing routine works great, so I've been able to return to my original
BIOS and get running again.  But, that doesn't help me with installing
the new CPU.

So, is anyone here using an Epox 8Kha+ mobo (Version 2), along with an
AthlonXP1700 (Palamino).  If so, what BIOS are you using; where did you
download it from; and how did you flash it?  And does that BIOS also
support the XP2100 T'bred B?

I followed the BIOS flashing instructions to the letter, twice, and both
times ran into the same problem outlined above.  Could it be that the
11/6/02 BIOS isn't compatible with the present 1700XP CPU, but only with
my new XP2100 CPU?  I find that hard to believe, so I have not proceeded
with installing the new CPU.

FYI, my system runs Win98SE, 512 Megs PC2100 RAM, and has a Radeon
8500LE videocard.

Can anyone help me out with this?  Any thoughts would be _greatly_
appreciated.  I want to get that new CPU installed and start
overclocking!

Thanks!
Bert

I would guess your bios flash went correctly, however now that it's been
flashed you may have to go back into the bios and adjust the settings.
Holler at me if that wasn't the problem or check out the EPOX NG.

I can't help with all of your questions but... I have an 8KHA+ with the
11/6/02 bios running an XP1800 chip. No problems. Supposedly this board can
handle up to XP2400 with the latest bios.

Tom,

I agree that the actual BIOS flashing procedure went like it was supposed to.
After flashing the BIOS to the 11/6/02 version the first time, I tweaked all
kinds of settings in the CMOS.  I even called a friend of mine with the same
system (un-flashed) and we reviewed the settings line-by-line and came up
empty.  I'd love to discover the "magic bullet" that makes everything fall
into place.  Basically the only settings I changed was to disable the onboard
sound (I have an SB Live) and then activate the "optimal" settings.  (Second
or third choice in the right hand column of the CMOS).  Those procedures are
exactly what worked in going back to the old BIOS, so I figured that's what's
needed to get the new BIOS to work.

Luckily, I was able to restore my original BIOS, so that's where I am now.

Do you know of any Epox-specific resource where I can follow-up on these
questions?  Unfortunately my ISP's news server (crappy AT&T Broadband) doesn't
offer an Epox newsgroup.

Thanks again,
Bert

Hi Wayne,

Actually, according to the Epox website, this board can go up to the XP2600
(266 FSB version), but you have to have the latest BIOS (and that's the
catch...)

That's exactly why I was flashing my BIOS.  Glad to hear that the 11/6/02 is
supposed to work with earlier CPU's.  Do you know if your 1800 is a Palomino or
is it a T'bred?  If not, approximately how old is it?  Did you have to upgrade
the BIOS to the 11/6/02 version or did that already come with your mobo?

Finally, do you know of any good Epox-specific resources to answer some of
these questions?  My ISP doesn't provide access to the Epox newsgroup.  8-(

Thanks for your help!

I agree.

After a flash, you need to clear out the BIOS settings (there should be a
button for setting everything to default or performance default) and then go
through them and re-set them as you like.

I bought my motherboard and CPU back in December of 2001 if that helps. The
motherboard is rev 2.0. I believe the CPU is a "Palomino" core, not a
"Thoroughbred", since the Thoroughbred wasn't available until mid-2002.  I
normally upgrade bios's, driver's, etc. as they become available just in
case they "fix" some problem I didn't realise I had :)

One decent resource is http://www.amdforums.com/

They have an Epox forum with lots of activity

Here's something I found on the AMDMB site for someone that was having a
similar problem. This was posted by an Epox Tech:

1) Power off
2) Move the CLEAR CMOS jumper to CLEAR for 10 seconds.
3) move the jumper back.
4) Check the CPU die, ensure it was not cracked or chipped in any way by the
heatsink installation.
5) Reinstall the heatsink/fan.
6) Press and hold the INSERT KEY while applying power.
7) Release INSERT if the screen shows.
8) Enter the BIOS and load the optimized defaults.
9) Save and exit.
10) Retest.

Thanks, Wayne.  I haven't come across that procedure before.  Got a few
questions though....

1.  This procedure is meant to be done after completing the BIOS flashing
routine, right?  (I know....stupid question...but I want to make sure because I
successfulyy restored my original BIOS.  My PC is again running fine at the
moment with the original BIOS, but also with the original CPU....)
2.  Where exactly is the CLEAR CMOS jumper?  Would simply removing the battery
for a minute or two accomplish the same thing?
3.  In Step 7, you say "if the screen shows".  You don't mean a Windows screen,
do you?  I assume you mean the screen where you can hit DELETE to enter the
BIOS, right?

If you can clear up those three points, I will give this a shot.

Thanks a lot!
Bert

1) As far as I can tell, you would do this right after flashing the BIOS. I
just copied from AMDMB, but that seems to make sense.

2) The Clear CMOS jumper is right beside the battery. There should be 3
pins. Just move the jumper to the cover pins 2-3 to clear the CMOS. Then
move it back.

3) Correct, the "boot" screen, where you can enter the BIOS.

I'm very interested in this as I have an Epox 8KHA+ (Revision 2) with an XP
2000+ and was thinking of doing what you are doing, which is to upgrade the
CPU.  The latest CPU guide suggest the 8KHA+ will handle up to an XP2600+
T-bird with the 9/3/02 BIOS.  I remember at one point they had a 9/3/02 BIOS
that was 'BETA' only, but I too saw that was gone and the 11/6/02 was in its
place so I would assume that would be the correct BIOS.

You didn't have your motherboard overclocked when you upgraded the BIOS did
you?   That's the only warning I see on the Epox site.

Please keep me updated on how you make out!

Wayne,

Thaks for all the help that you've given me with this so far. I think I'm making
progress.   I don't know how much of a "BIOS-flashing" expert you are, but
perhaps you can help me further.  Just tonight (before trying your latest
suggestion), I tried flashing to the BIOS dated 6/12/02, at the suggestion of
someone on the AMD newsgroup.  The short story is that I got the same
results.......

However, I took a close look at one of the error messages (post-flash) that I
get upon boot-up.  It appears to refer to my software firewall ("Tiny Personal
Firewall").  I had gotten this error message with my other flash attempts as
well, but is was "less decipherable than the other messages, so I forgot about
it.  In fact, the first error message that I get (about System memory being low)
always pops up shortly after the Firewall's Splash Screen pops up.

Every time, before flashing, I have carefully made sure that the system was not
overclocked (not even the videocard), and I uninstalled Goback (because booting
throughout amounted to booting thru a DOS shell, which is a no-no when
flashing).  But I didn't do anything with my firewall......   Do you know
whether this could be a factor?  If so, would I need to just disable it?  Or
would I need to totally uninstall it (ala Goback)?  I hope that I don't need to
unistall it because re-configuring it could be a pain.

Any further thoughts on this would be appreciated!
Bert

OT: AthlonXP; Epox BIOS; New CPU: No Luck! 8-(

by bertr » Tue, 11 Feb 2003 10:35:30

Scott,

No, I made sure that nothing was overclocked, but my issue MAY have been my
software firewall.  (See my response to Wayne Hutchinson on another branch of
this original thread.)

I'm no expert on AMD CPU's, but if your CPU is a T'bred already, you probably
don't need to do a BIOS flash.  Epox's CPU chart doesn't show an AMD 2000+
T'bred, so it may very well be that they only come in "Palomino" flavor.  In
that case you _would_ need to do a BIOS flash.

Even though I've run into problems, the good news is that the flash routine's
RESTORE feature works great, so you can always return to the BIOS you have now.
My system is a bit top-heavy with Goback and a software firewall running, so
don't judge the relative ease or difficulty of flashing the BIOS by my
experience alone.

If you do flash yours and upgrade your CPU, let me know how you make out.

BTW -- You are correct that the 8Kha+ Rev 2 can handle up to an AthlonXP2600.
However, make sure that it's the 266FSB version, not the 333FSB.  The last time
I checked prices, the 2600 went for about $285, while I got my 2100 for about
$95.  They say that the 2100 overclocks to speeds comparable to the 2600.
That's why I went for the 2100.  ......Just some food for thought.

Good Luck.
Bert

Thanks Bert...  I'm "slightly" overclocking the 2000+ (Running bus at 141
instead of 133) so my speed is 1.76GHz, where the default was 1.67GHz...
very minor <G>

I knew that I needed the 266 FSB version T-bird, but you are correct, the
2000+ is not a T-bird.

My system (8KHA+, 2000+, 1024mb of Crucial PC2100, MSI GF4 4600 using WinXP
Pro) seems to be running NR2003 extremely well so I may put off a major
rebuild for a bit longer and try and just upgrade the processor to a 2600
and add another video card (thats another whole story when the time comes!)
and see how long I can stretch this system out before a ground up rebuild is
necessary.   =)
