Freeshifting in GPL at last! (for me)

Freeshifting in GPL at last! (for me)

by David Montan » Wed, 07 Mar 2001 13:41:20

I just wanted to pass on some special thanks to George Smiley and JPJ.  The
mirror tweaker patch gave me enough extra fps to run the freeshifting
program for my Act labs shifter.  GPL is now even more incredibly
frustrating (and ***ive) than before!  The immersion is amazing!  It's
cost me about a second a lap at most tracks, but I'm still getting used to
being able to go from 5th to 3rd with nothing in between.  Is this a faster
way to drive?  Will this blow my engine on the advanced realism settings?
Thanks again,
David

Are you running the generic shifter patch that runs in the background?
The best option is the patch that actually modifies the GPL executable
(*JSJ*'s I think).
If you're using patched GPL.EXE, one thing to note is that GPL no
longer blips the throttle to rev-match on downshifts - it's a whole
new level of challenge.  It took me a while to figure out what was
going on - my car kept getting tail-happy on corner entries until
someone else posted this info and I realized I was totally unsettling
the back end by just banging down through the gears.
Great fun :)!

It won't blow the engine if you use it correctly.  Don't just go from 5th to
3rd right away...wait until later in your brake zone.  You will probably
have to give the throttle a big blip to get the revs to match (unless you
want the car to get real loose).  I would recommend going 5th to 4th to
3rd...this will sort of keep the car steady in the brake zone and if you
***up blipping the throttle on a downshift, it won't be as bad as
screwing one up from 5th to 3rd...

I havn't played GPL with freeshifting...but I'm assuming that GPL models the
shifting generally the same as in real life.

Why not, it models everything else like real life.   :)

Would it be possible to use the patch without Act-Labs shifter only to
remove auto rev-matching?

I've never heard of this "freeshifter program" - doh!
Please, where can one obtain the GPL.EXE patch version?

Hi JSJ,

Nice work on this utility.

Now how about Jari's question?  Is it posible for you to code the removal of the auto-throttle-blip for those of us stuck with 2-button sequential shift?  Removal of auto-throttle-blip on downshift is now an option in N4 and I love driving that way.

Thanks,
Pat

Hi There

And Thanks
