kidding about "penalizing faster cars" (I think you were :) ...
I always get a kick out of the way NASCAR fans promote the fact that the
racing is so "close". It is that way for many reasons, none of which I
consider to encourage "pure racing":
1. Frequently thrown full course yellows, which bunch up the field;
2. lack of motivation to pull out a big lead, due to the fact that the
inevitable full course yellow will render it meaningless, hence "why
would I want to use up my tires and fuel building up a 30sec lead if it
is going to be taken away from me every 20 minutes"; sure, this
promotes close racing, but I prefer to see a faster car rewarded
consistently for it's pace throughout the race, not just in the last 1/5
of the race;
3. Constant rule changes to penalize the fastest cars. Again, IMHO, I
prefer to see excellence in driving skill, engineering and design
rewarded, rather than penalized.
4. Stringent restrictions on racecar design and materials. This is an
approach that has been taken to keep costs down; a respectable reason,
and a fine approach. We can't fool ourselves into thinking that we are
seeing "state of the art" machinery out there when they are using some
chassis that are 8-10 years old, but I don't necessarily see that as a
negative, just a fact.
I realize NASCAR has it's merits, and I don't wish to rehash another
"battle of series" - we are comparing apples and oranges, and neither is
"better" than the other, just very different. I prefer F1, others
prefer NASCAR, and each of us "feels" that the other is a little
misguided in their opinion, but we are all entitled to our own
preferences. However, the reasons for the close racing in NASCAR not to
be overlooked, and those reasons are (IMHO) not in the interest of
"pure" racing as I see it.
