Help - I'm getting ready to buy a new computer to play Nascar2.  I've
heard about the intergraph board but what configuration should I get.  I
was thinking about a 166/200 Pentium with MMX.  I don't know what's
compatible with what and I don't want to spend $2500 and then get less
than spectacular performance.  I'm planning to order from Gateway 2000.
If I just order their off the shelf unit will that work great?

If you have the money get the P200, if not save a bit of cash and get
the P166.  The Intergraph card is a very good deal at $149, but you may
also want to check out the Sierra Screamin3d (more expensive but has a
great bundle) or the Canopus Total3D (more expensive still, but is
faster and adds 3D sound and stereoscopic support for some games).  Of
course you will not be able to get any of these cards from Gateway, so
you'd need to order the system w/out a graphics card and add it
yourself.  Also as a bare minimum get 32megs of RAM (64 would be
better).

Yes, they're a great choice!  I have bought several of their machines
through the years- I recommend however, that you demand a Soundblaster
audio card from them, so you don't encounter problems with that
Ensonique garbage they typically install.  They'll give you the
soundblaster in leu of the ensonique, free of charge.  Buy the fastest
processor you can afford!

Don't forget to try SoundBlaster options.
From experience, they have the least problems with graphic / sound problems
from these new games.

Get the wrong cards and you will end up with mental anguish trying to get
help / download drivers etc.
All the efforts just to run a game.

Eric,
In your post about the ultimate N2 machine you mentioned the Sierra
Screamin 3D card.  I am new to the 3D cards so I have a few ?s.  Is the
Sierra card verite based?  The guy at my local comp store mentioned
virge cards.  Are these the same as Verite?  From what I have read, the
verite card is the way to go because it is the most widely supported 3D
card.  What do you think?  And finally, does the Sierra card come with
ICR2 3D?

I'll feel free to answer the factual questions in your post; it's not
really relevant for me (a Sierra employee) to post my "opinions" in
the hardware accelerator market...

Hi Pete,

I am no expert in computers but I will supply a more helpful response
 than you received from Brian:)

The Gateway is a good computer and has better custumer service than
most.
The 166MMX with the Intergraph will suit your needs for ***. If you
go
to the Gateway Homepage(http://www.racesimcentral.net/), you can build a computer
to suit your needs. I would suggest getting the office model so that
your
hard drive won't have a bunch of programs that you don't want. One
thing
you might want to think about before you buy is that the 166MMX will
have
the VX chipset and SDRAM. So if you have any extra RAM from your old
computer, you will not be able to install it in the Gateway. Also the
Gateway only has 2 PCI slots and 2 ISA with one shared, so that will
limit
 expanding in the future.

Make sure you tell Gateway you need this computer to run in MS-Dos mode
and not in msdos mode through windows. Otherwise they will give you a win
modem, and you will have to locate and load  all the dos drivers yourself.
Nascar1 has to be run in msdos mode and nascar2 needs the modem to run in
msdos mode.
