Linksys router Any tips for online racing?

I just threw away my dead network hub and replaced it with a linksys
router.  I didn't have to configure ANYTHING, all three systems came right
back online.
  But..."SHOULD" I be doing anything?  (if it ain't broke I don't wanna
fixit if you know what I mean)

also, with the hub I was paying for 3 ip #'s from the ISP,  this router
box says all three systems can use the same address...anyway to tell if I've
already done that (all sharing the same address)or is each computer still
using the extra ip's from the cable company??

You don't need the extra IPs. Your router is using one of the IP's that it
is given. The other IPs are simply wasted. If you look at the IP of the
machines, you'll see they'll be something like 192.168.1.10, while the IP
you get from the cable company will be something different. This is because
of the subnet that is created by the router. There are a couple of things
you could do with the setup, but I really don't see the need.

Dave,

All the ISPs tell you that you need a seperate IP for each computer in
your home.  But with a router you simply don't.  It's call greed. Just
connect your cable or DSL line to  your Linksys router. The IP# is the WAN
IP is what your router uses, and is what the rest of the net sees:
123.456.78.90. Your Router on the LAN side then starts off it's own assigned
IPs.

Router: 192.168.1.0
Comp 1  192.168.1.100
Comp 2  192.168.1.101
Comp 3  192.168.1.102

Using any computer to host will require you to place that computer
in what is called the DMZ or open the ports needed, as the Linksys routers
firewall can't be altered or turned off.

When I'm racing online I don't have to open up any ports or use the
DMZ.

: Dave,

Joel it's not greed.  They are a business, they have a right to charge for
service.

It's also part of proper network management.  They design "THEIR" network
based on a number of factors, one is usage per node.  With wireless
accesspoints readily available, some ISP's are watching this very closely.
They can tell if you're using a Linksys, even if you hide the fact, there
are other ways to tell if you're sharing the connection.

I'd recommend everyone read your ISP's acceptable usage guide/agreement.
They 'may' frown on sharing.  Most don't however and turn a blind eye.  But
if you're a heavy hitter on a segment they will go after you.

Ditto here, I love my Linksys router. I have no problems racing online on
Sierra with it - if I race on OLR though, there are a couple ports I have to
open.

The only time you would need the extra IP addys would be if more than one person wants to race
on-line for say GPL, N4, or N2002 at the same time.  Each person needs their own IP addy, and the
router is most likely only using the single IP.

Did you bother reading the manual or do you just expect everyone here
to solve your problems?

Mine is not, it is the BEFSR41 4 port.
When I lived at home, I had 2 pc's hooked up to it sharing the same cable
modem, and also my oldest daughter's boyfriend and I would race N4 at the
time together using it.
Now that I am in an apartment with just my younger daughter, I still use it
for the protection it gives.

need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry,

rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I

ummm, that's not true. I often race N2K2 at the same time as my son using a
Linksys Router and only 1 public IP.

After rereading your post I may have misunderstood what you were saying. If
that's the case then I am sorry.
