InternetRaceFinder & Linksys Router?

by Doug Roger » Tue, 02 Jan 2001 04:04:33

Total newbie to online racing, here, folks. I just downloaded IRF to use
with N4, but I can't seem to connect. I think there may be an issue with
the Linksys DSL router I have. Any advice?
TIA

You need to use "port forwarding" in the adv section of the routers admin
util.  You can use any port numbers between 1300-65000 (I use 22000-23000)
then point those port numbers to the IP addy of the box you want to run IRF
on.  Then go into IRF options and plug in the port numbers you used in the
'forwarding" section of the router..  Bear in mind when using the
"forwarding" function you need to disdable DHCP on the router and set your
LAN clients manually.  This all assumes you have flashed the router to
firmware to 1.36.

On my system I have to have DHCP running in order to get the Linksys
to work properly. I guess it depends on your provider and what they are
running. I don't have a Static IP and I'm using PPPoE. I also upgraded to
the new 1.37 firmware and it seems to have helped my stability a bit.
I haven't played with the N4 demo in awhile but if I recall I had my port
forwarding set from 32766 to 32808. This was required in order to host,
I didn't have to do anything in order to join an existing race.

DHCP will work fine until the client lease expires.  Even then you may still
get same IP.  In a larger network though you will likely not get the same
IP.  Hence IRF will no longer work.

I seem to have it running now, although I have no idea what I did. Maybe
it just wanted to be rebooted a few times.
Thanks for all the help.
