Linksys router, GPL, N4, N3

Hi all I've just installed a new router to connect 2 pc's, and I'm not
getting the results I'd hoped for, I would like to be able to host on one pc
and join from the client machine, so far, no joy, using VROC I can host from
either machine, see the race in the list, click to join and GPL starts, but
connect times out. Using the route inspect, I can see either machine from
the other, but still, no connect. I'm looking around for configuration info
to allow me to host and join from my own little home network......I've been
reading about forwarding ports, but I haven't quite got the understanding of
what I need just yet, so if anyone has overcome this situation, I'd surely
appreciate a push in the right direction......Meanwhile I'll be searching
for answers on my own, here's what I've got so far:
Motorola cable modem to Linksys 4 port router, to nic's installed in each
machine, I'm assuming all the cable routing is correct because I checked it,
and can access the net from each rig, or share files from machine to
machine.
Host Computer:

GPL v1.2, Nascar3 , Nascar4, and WinVROC installed and patched to current
versions.

official drivers, W98SE, GPL, N3, N4, and WinVROC installed and patched to
current versions.

Does this have anything to do with Socks server in VROC options? As I don't
have a clue what a Socks server is, I have left it alone for now.

Thanks in advance,

I can now connect in GPL, by hosting thru VROC and joining from client using
multiplayer in GPL, but not thru VROC, still working on N3/N4 tho.....and
would like to be able to connect thru VROC, if possible.......

Well, I'm using a new Netgear RT314. I'd like to know if it's possible to
set up ranged port filters to work with GPL, or is the only available
solution to temporarily set up the host in the DMZ? Neatgear support didn't
know anything about the filters.

But why on earth would you want to connect your local client through VROC,
and not through IPX/SPX?

Because, clearly, I'm an idiot who knows nothing of network protocols, to me
a port is wine, and I was lucky enough to stumble upon the tcp/ip solution
for connecting. I've seen an IPX option in the games, but wouldn't know what
to do with it.....just thought it was strange that I could see the race I
was hosting, yet couldn't connect......for me, taking the host computer into
the dmz made no difference with VROC.

In order to host on VROC, N3, or N4, you must forward the correct ports
on the Linksys router.

If you want to join a GPL race hosted on your other machine, DO NOT join
through VROC.  Connect directly through GPL.

Setting up port forwarding on the Linksys is not at all difficult.
Here's what I use (supports GPL, and I think N4 is the same as GPL as
far as ports go):

  6969-6971     Machine #1
  32766-32808   Machine #1
  6972-6974     Machine #2
  32810-32852   Machine #2

Both machines can host a race with these settings.

I have the exact same router and the exact same problems. I am working on
the port forwarding issues now. If I get it working, I will let you know
exactly what I had to do. I have a 4 node network with this router and was
hoping to run a dedicated server for games like N4, GPL, Nascar Heat,
DTR:Sprints, Viper, etc., allowing outside users to connect, as well as my
remaining client machines. I have found several posts about port changing in
GPL for firewalls, etc. but do not have the specific settings for the
Linksys yet. One thing I read was that you need firmware version 1.36 or
later for the router. It is a pretty simple upgrade and it did not mess up
any of my settings. I only had to go back to the default Linksys password.
The most recent firmware version for the BEFSR41 - EtherFast 4-Port
Cable/DSL Router is 1.37 and can be found here,
 http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?dlid=1

Anyway, like I said if I get everything working correctly I will let you
know exactly what I had to do. Thanks.

Upgrade your firmware to 1.37 and forward ports 32766-32809 UDP not TCP to
the
internal LAN. Works for me with GPL and N4
