Problem with MS Digital Speakers and Viper Racing

by Bradley Rossett » Fri, 12 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Ok here is my story,

I have a Pii 450, SB Live value, scsi HD (3) and SCSI Cd and CDR, V2 SLI and
256MB RAM.  I have had cambridge soundworks running well over the past 6
months but I decided to upgrade to the MS Digital soundsystem.

Now the soundsystem plays cds great and some games (delta force, NHL hockey
99 etc).  But when playing Viper Racing I get a lot of static and crackling
over the speakers.

I have both the USB and Audio (plugged into the SB Live out) connected as
per the MS guide.

I have tried to not have the audio plugged into the SB live but I still get
the crackling.

Has anyone else seen anything like this ?

Thanks

Brad

I have been getting occasional crackling and muted treble in gpl and viper
for several months, but my system is quite a bit different.  P200mmx, sb16,
64sdram, yamaha speaker/sub.  It sounds like a loose connection somewhere,
but everything else (cd audio, other games, etc) works fine.  I'm beginning
to think it's just the game.  It seems to happen more often at higher
volumes.

I had this problem in GPL. I use a PCI 128 and found the solution was to
replace the sound files. Apparently some of the engine sounds were 8 bit
sound, so I replaced it with a 16 bit sound.dat file which curred the static
problem. Other suggestions were to replace the sound card, but I thought
that was extreme. BTW..the sound problem existed only in GPL, not other
games...I think this is a clue.
