Which race-game to buy ?????

by Bart W. van Lit » Mon, 22 Dec 1997 04:00:00

Hi!

I wanna buy a racing game, but dont know which.
Could you reccomend me (or not) one of these game, and please why:

Andretti Racing (ea)
Cart Pr. Racing (microsoft)
F1 Racing Sim. (ubi soft)
TOCA (codemasters)

I have and like grandprix2, Indycar2.
I don't like PowerF1

I don't mind a arcade game as long as the handling is realistic.
I do have an 3dfx card :-)

Thanks very,very much!!

Bart

Here are some sites with info on some of the games your're looking
at....hopefully they can help you make your decision.

C.P.R.

The APEX
http://cart.gamestats.com

CART Precision Racing Playground (my site :-)
http://www.msu.edu/user/mcclosk6/cart/cart.htm

F1 Racing Simulation
http://www.f1racingsim.com

I don't know sites off the top of my head for either of the other 2....I do
have the TOCA demo and it is pretty fun, but I still like CPR better.  Good
luck making up your mind, and happy racing!

If you want a sim, ubisoft F1, for arcade go with TOCA (it's arcade
but with good handling, and great gameplay).

I would strongly recommend you don't get CPR till it is patched. If
in the USA you can at least solve the AI joke (very bad AI). Also, it
would be a big gamble as to whether you can get CPR to steer properly.
Do yourself a big favour and get F1RS. F1RS is like GP3 ie better in
most departments. CPR is an alpha :((

F1RS is the only one on your list I would recommend if you want a sim.
Wait for the patch on CPR unless you want to just race against yourself
(AI cars are too easy to beat if you don't let them wreck when you lap
the field!.

Hi Bart,

If you don't like Power F1 then you should probably cross TOCA from
your list, and you should in any event cross Andretti Racing from you
list.

That leaves two, F1 Racing Simulation and CART Precision Racing. By
itself, CART Precision Racing is a fair stab at a good racer, although
currently with too many problems to be recommended. However, when
placed alongside F1 Racing Simulation it is eclipsed in virtually
every department, with only CPR's sound being better.

My recommendation? Absolutely no question, go for F1 Racing
Simulation. It's way ahead of the others in your list, all of which
are however bgood in their own right - just not when compared to F1RS.

Cheers!
John

Arcade w/Somewhat Realistic Handling:

TOCA Racing
NFS or NFS SE (NFS2 & NFS2/SE lack in the handling department)

Simulator w/3dfx support:

F1RS by Ubisoft
Cart Precision Racing by Microsoft
Nascar 2 - hopefully soon w/3dfx support

Out of those five, TOCA and F1RS are your best bet...

NFS2/SE is pure eyecandy, but lacks long term replayability.

I have a P166, 32mb, Pure 3D(3DFX). I currently own or owned all of these
games. TOCA and Andretti are both arcade racers. I still have TOCA, as it
is fun as an arcade racer. Andretti was lacking in every dept. for me, bad
gameplay/control, lots of draw in even with a 3D card, terrible interface,
unimaginative tracks, etc. That one went back to the store. CPR is
definitely a mixed bag - good multiplayer, good sound, good garage/setup
options, poor 3D performance, terrible AI, poor control. I still have CPR,
hoping that the patch clears some of this up, but it is no longer installed
on my hard drive. Ubisoft's F1 Racing is the most complete and satisfying
package - beautiful/fast 3DFX glide enhanced graphics, good AI, good
control, good setup options, etc. If you have to get only one, especially
if you tend more on the sim side, go with F1 Racing!

I don't know if I agree with you here.  I had Power F1 on my system P200
with 32mg and no 3dfx.  And totally sucked terrible graphics, bad
tracks, and bad control.  It was no fun at all.  Even if it doesn't have
any thing good, if it is somehow fun I will keep it, but Power F1 had
nothing.  Toca on the other hand has ok graphics and ai and handling,
but it is so much fun. I just wish we had it in the states the demo is
great. Maybe after I get my pure 3d I will order it.

Have you try Indy Racing from ABC Sports?
I looking for a CART/INDY game but cannot decide between CPR and Indy.
