POLL: Favourite GPL Car and Track!

by Andre » Wed, 08 Sep 1999 04:00:00

My favorite track has to be Monza, it is fast and furious, and the parabola
is of tantamount importance in a good lap time.  My favorite car is the
Lotus/Ford 49 (Ricardo Nunnini's setups).  I truly love the course at
Mosport also, it comes in a close 2nd for me.

The Ferrari is my favorite car but the Lotus is my weapon of choice. IMO,
the Ferrari is the best "race car" in GPL. Driving the Ferrari is like slow
dancing with a beautiful lady. Driving the Lotus is like trying to ride a
2000lb bull who just had his "jewels" electrocuted:) Hmm, guess I never was
one for dancing...

Zandy is my favorite with Mosport a very close second.

Im going to probably surprise alot of people with my pick of track but im going
to say Mexico.  Being able to weave through the esses on the ragged edge is
totally exilerating to me.  Plus racing here becomes a battle of who has the
balls to drive into Hairpin deeper to make the pass.  Plus the back straight
into Peralta onto the front straight really give you an oppurtunity for setting
up and making passes.  A close second would have to be Spa and third i would
probably say Watkins Glen.

I probably wont surprise much with my car choice which is <drumroll please> the
Eagle-Weslake T1G.  I love the way its long wheelbase lets you drift the car
through corners and maintain speed.  Second would be the BRM (cause its just
plain fun) and Third would be the Ferrari.

Pleased to see someone else that's found Senor Nunnini's setups. I was saved
from self injury/tossing out GPL until I found these . Unlike most
novice/poor drivers (novice I'm not, poor(as in bad) I certainly am) I find
the Lotus easiest to drive fast. I can't see why people rave about alison's
setups - waaay too much understeer for me.
Anyhow - fave car Lotus, fave track Spa - give it a try, flat out
everywhere, only brake 3 times in 3 and a half minutes
                            Cheers..

Count me as a freak, too -- I really like Mexico.  A VERY challenging -- and
rewarding -- track.  Tons of fun.  I find Watkins Glen to be a bit more
enjoyable overall, but I'd say they're tied for favorite in my book.

Thanks to Alison Hine, my favorite car is . . . the Ferrari (with her
setups, of course!).

Great fun all around.

My favorite track is Silverstone......I use the Ferarri with Allison
Hine's setups (with modified gearing).  Spa and Monza are great for
all out speed.  And, call me a coward, in the 5 months since I've had
the game I have YET to race the 'Ring.

Wow, you must try it!  At least for a Sunday drive ;-D
Just pump up the ride heights to 4" or more and you'll be fine.
Most the corners are slow so stay in 2nd or 3rd.

Jason.

What was your best time with Nunnini's setup?  I could only get to 1:31.xx in a
race, with a draft...

That's ok.  I've never RACED it either, and I think I've only done 5-7 laps
total.  I've had the game since last October...
Funny thing is, I WANTED the game for the Ring...<g>

I'm just the opposite, I run the Ring all the time, full length GP
races at that.  For me it is the only track I can run a GP race at
without a sense of repetition setting in.  At the end of the race
I'm completely drained yet euphoric at the same time.  I
also have fond memories of the first time I ever played
the original release of GPL - tearing down the straight at the
Ring after 10 minutes of restrained exploration in the
Ferrari with a huge grin on my face.  Seconds later crashing
wildly at the bend in a failed attempt to take it flat out
(still haven't managed that feat).  Gazing in awe at the
replay as my car caught air, landed crossed up, and spun
into the hedges provoking a terrible crash complete with sparks
and fire.  The Ring really shows off the great GPL driving
model in all of it's glory.

The only other place that comes close is Monaco.  Unfortunately
I usually wreck trying to pass an uncooperative backmarker
there (where are the blue falgs for the AI drivers?) so I can't
really say I like it, respect it is more like it.

For online races I like Brands Hatch, so many great online
moments there, what fun we had when that one came out!
Hopefully the GPLEA will give it a new coat of paint fairly soon.

Picking a car is somewhat harder.  I almost always drive the
Lotus in a competitive situation but when it comes time to have
fun each car has something that the others don't that draws you
to it.  Overall, I would say the Ferrari though.  It was the car that
made it 'easy' to learn what driving in GPL was all about.  Once I
mastered it, mastering the others wasn't nearly as difficult.

Favorite track, favorite car, GPL still remains my favorite game.
After a full year passing I find that incredible.

Hmm.  Where the HELL do you pass at Monaco?  I can't even get out of 3rd gear
for most of the lap...<g>

Easy - if it's an AI car, just ram them gently as they go through the
bus-stop hairpin - that puts them into the hay bales and gives you a
clear run.

If it's a human driver, just wait till they crash out - and stay well
back as they go through the chicane!
