Toca 2 and Frame Rate Question

by =Gunslinge » Tue, 06 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Ok, let me tell you my system first.

P2/300 Celeron
64 Meg SDRAM
Monster Fusion 16 meg Banshee
TM Formula T2 Steering Wheel
CH Pedals (I don't like the TM pedals)

3Dfx settings
Disable Vsync, all other settings default.

Ok, here is the problem. No matter what graphic settings I choose in
Toca2, the FPS appears to be the same.
I went from the lowest res, 512x??? with all graphic options disabled
or set to lowest setting.
Then I set everything maxed at 1024x768
Whenever I play back a replay, the FPS is exactly the same (as far as
my eyes can tell) no matter what graphic settings I choose.
Can someone else with a similar system confirm this?
Is there a FPS limiter in Toca 2.
The only time it is jerky is on certain "pulled back" camera angles
where more than 8 or 9 cars are seen at once.
It's not a real big gripe, just wondering why no matter what graphic
options I change, the FPS stays the same?
Any ideas?

P.S., my time record on Branxton Hatch (spelling) is 0:42.42 in a
Nissan Renault using manual transmission.
Anyone got that beat?

So where is Branxton Hatch and what the hell is a "Nissan Renault"?  Is it
a Nissan or a Renault....please, do tell.

The track is excusable,  and sure people get car models mixed up
between makers.......but how do you get the car MANUFACTURERS mixed
up?

Nissan or Renault? you still haven't answered the question!

Is it worth being seen as a rude pedant to find out?  In other words, does
it ***ing matter??!!

The guy asked a question, one which could be easily answered without
displaying such silly and offensvie parades of disbelief . . .

If that's being rude, then I hate to think what you thought of
Gunslingers post!

He was also asked a question, which he did not answer either.

Toca 2 and Frame Rate Question

Ok, on your site you say the following:

Good news! Laptimes no longer influenced by Framerate!
One of the major problems with the original TOCA was the fact that you
could dramatically improve your lap times by improving the frame rate
your PC could deliver. This was achieved either by using a faster PC
or reducing graphics levels within the game. This disparity caused
problems for online racers and those who submitted times to offline
competitions like those at this site and the "hall of fame" run by
Codemasters themselves.

When the demo version of TOCA2 was released, we were dismayed to find
that the same thing applied to the new game - better frame rates gave
lower lap times.

HOWEVER: Now that the full game has been released, brief testing
appears to show that this is no longer the case. I tested by doing a
number of laps round Donington in a Nissan Primera at both full
graphics settings and the minimum I could select. In both cases my
laptimes fell in the same 3 second window, with neither configuration
showing any significant advantage over the other.

Now, that still doesn't tell me if the frame rates stay the same even
if you have all graphics maxed or all graphics off.
If I turn all graphics down the frame rate appears the same as if I
have all graphics on.
So why would anyone run with lower graphics?

Toca 2 and Frame Rate Question

Hmmm...
Maybe this is the reason I experience occasional stuttering (once or twice a
lap) no matter what resolution I run at and no matter what level of detail i
set. (yes - even happens at 640x480x16 with everything turned off/low on a
Celeron416A - 64mb - CL TNT)
The demo ran as smooth as silk so this kinda does my head in.
