My return to GPL - quesions

by Don Burnett » Tue, 03 Aug 2004 00:57:05

Hi all,

I have been somewhat absent for a while now. I went through a *** divorce
about a year ago, and was seperated for the last 2.5 years. I was pretty
busy with work and fnishing raising my youngest daugher, so I have been away
from simracing for some time. Now my girls are all growed up ..

I have had a nice relaxing weekend, so I got the bug and decided to install
GPL again. It has not been on my machine for at least 2-2.5 years, and I
really haven't run it much for about 3 years now.

I am running Windows XP Pro, on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe, with Athlon XP2800+,
ATI Radeon R9800 Pro, a gig of PC3200 Corsair XMS ram, MS Sidewinder FF
wheel,  and Audigy2 ZS soundcard, with 5.1 Klipsch speaker system.

I installed GPL in 2000 compatiblity mode, patched it with the all in one
patch, and it runs fine. I then installed some additional tracks (
absolutely gorgeous), the large setup package ( 600 setups I believe), and
the Nigel Patterson carsound update. I really like the new car sounds,
sounds great on my system. I run it  in OpenGL on my ATI 9800 Pro, at
1600x1200, anistropic at 16, and fsaa set to quality. All textures on,
texture bias to high.

I could not believe how advanced this sim is , even by today's standards,
after all these years. Absolutely incredible. Thankfully, it did not take me
long to settle back in at Monza, guess it is kind of like riding a back :).
I am having a blast again - plus, back when I did run GPL, I did not race
online much at all, I pretty much only ran Monza and Spa, and did not even
attempt running a World Championship. There is a good bit I have to look
foward to with this great sim.

I have downloaded GPLEA 65 Season, the update, and the 65 season sounds.,
and look foward to that as well.

Some questions for you hard core GPL'ers:

My blap so far at Monza, with the Eagle, is 1:30. That is only good enough
to get me around 10th-11th spot in a race. I think I am about driving at my
limit, although I do know a couple of turns I can probably get a little more
out of.
Isn't there some way to slow the AI cars down some? Those bastards are fast!
:).. Seems like I remember there was someway to set them to where they were
more in line with the player's speeds?

Is Dave Noonan's converter still available and worth it? I have ICR2, and
all the Papy Nascar sims. Will it work with N2003 season? I think I have
downloaded pretty much most of the user created tracks that appealed to me -
love the ovals too.

Any updated cars I should really look at getting? Any updates to the
original tracks graphics ?
Any other updates or mods I should definitely get?

Where are folks racing GPL online these days?  I would like to give it a try
once I get comfortable with the tracks.

Thanks for any advice, I am having a blast with this sim - for some reason,
more than I used too !!

Yep, get it.  Don't have a url though, sorry.

Any updates to the original tracks graphics ?

Yep, best to look at the rsc forums, as they seem to be scattered around
now.  www.racesimcentral.com.  GPl forum there.

1965 season mod.  Outstanding stuff imo.

for Igor, used to race the 65 mod with.  Can also be used for 67 stuff.

Don, if/when you grab AI Tweak you will need to ensure that your system also
has VBRUN300.DLL.

Bruce.

it's almost impossible to find at the Microsoft site...but what you are
looking for are the Visual Basic 6 runtime files.  vbrun3 MAY be the old v3
of Visual basic.  Try googling for private sites that have it available for
dload..

My return to GPL - quesions

Hey all,

Ok, I have downloaded and installed some user made tracks, the 65 season,
new carsounds, and 65 season setups.

I now have, several different exe's for GPL to launch it with.

Below is what I have:

GPL.exe  - obviously the orininal patched
GPL65D.exe
GPL65G.exe
GPLC65.exe
GPLCES.exe
GPLCFD.exe
GPLCFG.exe
GPLCFV.exe

I have not installed the 65 setups. I see several folders there, that are
not listed in my original players/myname/setups folder. Not sure where to
extract these too.

I browsed in my files for a readme to explain the above, and I either missed
it or do not have one.
Any advice would be appreciated, or just point me to some sort of readme
that explains all of the above. I am curious as to what the difference is
between all the executables I have.

Thanks,

Don Burnette

OH, one more thing.

When I launch GEM+2.2.16, in the race option, it offers me 1967, full 65,
and lite65.
However just to the right of that, in the season box, it only offers me
1967. Should this not offer me the 65 season as well?

Thanks,

Don Burnette

gplc65.exe is the '65 mod, I don't use the rest so I can't tell you the
differences but as I understand it they are various engine/chassis
combinations like FD, FV & so on.

There's a readme that comes with the '65 mod that explains all this &
more. You're right that the 'other' option box in gem should offer the
'65 physics to go with the graphics pack you select. Do you have more
than one gpl install by any chance? Try resetting the path to gpl.exe in
the gem options.

Malc.
