GPL Return

Ye Gods! Always had GPL, always played it to the exclusion of all other
driving sims, even bought a new PC in 99 so It'd run, got introduced it when
two race
mechanics I worked with preferred it to sleeping at nights.

I recently got GP4 and it runs like treacle unless I bin the scenery, a
disapointment
considering how well GPL runs at full belt.

Anyway, whats got my enthusiasm up is refinding all the GPL sites and this
NG, going stronger
than ever after all this time. Just got ADSL and have started to download
new stuff.
After just one day I've got a superdetailed Ferrari to drive, superdetailed
Spa and Watkins Glen, and just 2
new tracks local to me, Aintree and Oulton Park. I've raced at both for real
on bikes, at Aintree bikes use
half the GP track, the paddock is on the Sefton Straight now, and having
fallen off at Country Corner
in June, I can say there is NOT a glass wall when you run off into the
field, it hurt enough
without! What gets me about Aintree is it's accurate even down to the leaden
sky which
is always there when I am!

Oulton has silly chicanes now, like the GPL Monza it's great to see what the
track was like
before it was emasculated. That reminds me, anyone done the Monza banking
yet? I've got SOS
which has half the banking and half the road track.

My favorite GPL track is Spa, just love howling thru Burneville wide open,
there's a little right
after two flat lefts on the second half of the lap that messes me up though,
I run up the bank if I dont
brake and shift down. I struggle to get under 3.30 in the Ferrari (using
Alison Hine's setup). My
best is the Glen, 1.07 on a joystick. I can qualify on pole at Monza, but
only by riding the barriers!

Enough of this waffle, just came on to ask if you can watch on line races,
or just practice with other cars?
Would like a go but not to jump in at the deep end. Point me at a good
article.

Cheers,
Mr Davo

Course you can!

Assuming you know about Vroc www.vroc.net, monza races are usually a good
starting point for people new to it, and you'll be around people better and
worse than you, but you certainly wont be out of your depth. In general, as
long as you are respectful to other drivers and sportsmanlike, then it
doesn't really matter how fast you are online (example at monza the online
lap times range from 1m26 to 1m35ish), and of course practice practice
practice!

BTW, rail-riding is frowned upon greatly! :)

Easiest way is to load up VROC and join a race but not drive. You'll be
taking the place of a driver but I don't have a problem with that.

Alternatively there's a thing called GPL proxy but it's a bit tricky to
set up.

BTW, check out the GPLEA web site. There's a new BRM out too.

Monza track including the banked section of the track is called "Milano",
you can find it at the GPL Track Database or GPL++.

Yes and no. The fantasy-track-like Milano is just a placeholder. A proper
GPL-Monza -> Monza+oval project is going strong; a screenshot was posted in
GPLEA:s forum about a week ago.

<snip>

As far as practising goes, there are quite often VROC sessions set up
specifically for that, rather than racing - read the descriptive text
in the right-hand pane, and look for long qualifying sessions. As for
watching, just crash into a tree at T1 - if it's Monza, no-one will
notice ;-) However, I strongly urge you to "jump in at the deep end".
Your times are quite fast enough, though I don't think you'll be very
popular if you railride!

2002:

Now I come to think of it, I wrote a short guide to VROC survival a
while back. A little of it's out of date now, but there are still
some useful pointers in there:

I found this very useful reading a year or so ago when I first ventured
online!

Thanks David!

Thanks everyone, got so much info it looks like work and GPL
are going to fight each other for my time.
Looking forward to driving the new Ferrari round the Milano
banking later for a start!

At the moment Ive got Vroc working OK, but GPL cant see my
Ethernet card which is connected to my router, I put the line in
the core.ini file to disable the modem, but dont see where to go
next - sure the answer's out there in the info.

So pleased that GPL has acheived the immortality it deserves, as
it feels and looks so real. BTW I can lap quite fast in GP4 with
a wheel missing - well thats realistic innit!

Isn't there something in there about "lookup ip addresses"?
