GPl 1.1 - AI car reliability?

by Graeme Nas » Thu, 29 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Am I the only one who seems to think that the AI cars are soooo much
less reliable in GPL 1.1?

The other day I tried to do a Grand Prix race at Silverstone against 9
AI cars. By the time I crashed out on lap 24, There were just 3 AI left,
and at the end of the race there were 2.
I then did another Grand Prix with 19 AI, and I didn't race in it. 7
cars finished. I did the same at Kyalami and 6 finished!

And recently I've been doing races at Monza, and in qualifying, I'm
rarely able to do a lap without passing at least one slowing car!

Do you think Papy made these changes or am I seeing things? :-)

Absolutely. And I must say that driving against the AI has become much
more fun and a much better practice for online racing, with all the
accidents!

Sounds like today's Formula One races ;)

Below are stats for the 1967 GP season for the number of cars that
started and how many finished:

                  Started       Finished
South Africa        18             6
Monaco              16             6
Holland             17            10
Belgium             18            10
France              15             6
Great Britain       21            10
Germany             17             8
Canada              18            11
Italy               18             7
USA                 18             7
Mexico              19            12

See http://www.forix.com/asp/gp.asp?z=0&k=0&l=0&r=6701&c=2 for race by
race stats.  Pretty cool stuff!

thery are actually realistic figures graeme, in 1967 seeing over 6 cars
finish was a shock

Interesting point, Graham. In fact, the demise of AI cars in real life back
in the sixties was horrendous........the attrition rate per event was very
high and reliability across all aspects of a car was ***y low!!

I've just finished reading a book on the Brabham cars and teams from the
very first BT to those used in the 1985 season.....so the book covers a good
20 years of Brabham racing. The poor reliability of not only the Brabhams
but all/any of the cars during the 1960s........suspension failures, tyre
failures, electrical glitches and engine problems of  every
nature..........stands out like a sore thumb.

Papyrus might just have got it right again! :o)

Should read "demise of cars......."
There wasn't too much AI around back then!! :o)

I've noticed a slight increase in the failures of the player cars too - my
Brabham doesn't seem to like hard shifts as much anymore :(

Totally off topic, but is that not one of the best CD that has come
