Hello,

I plan to add a Creative Sound Blaster Live (value pack) sound card to
my system. Is the any 'cons or troubles' I should know about the card?
Thanks for the info.

The Live card can be a little finicky with irq's, you may have to experiment
with different pci slots if you have any conflicts. Other than that, it is a
great soundcard, and to fully appreciate it you'll want a good 4 speaker
arrangement with subwoofer/

If you run GPL, shut off the Creative Launcher, it's been known to lock the
sim on some systems.

Actually there little need for the Creative Launcher at all, just make a
nice 4 speaker environment with the correct front/rear balance, no EAX
effects (which doesn't stop them working in games btw), save it and then
tell the launcher not to load at startup.

If you have a VIA chip set and the EAX echo reverb sounds like ***in
games, be sure you can take the card back.  Creative Labs does not have a
fix and the 4in1 patch from VIA does not do the trick, there is an IRQ
conflict with the sound card and the hard drive access.  Call Creative
before you buy the card and see if they have a recent fix.

Did you know that the SBLive is not hardware accelerated at all (runs
ENTIRELY in software emulation)?
Are you aware that it relies 100% on the cpu to perform all sound/etc.
outputs (steals a few CPU cycles)?
Did you know it is a little piggy when it comes to gobbling up precious IRQs
because it runs entirely in software emulation mode 100% of the time?
It can be a real nightmare as posted earlier to install if you have a system
with all your slots full (a real musical chair shuffle to desperately
attempt finding the right slot combination to allow your SBLive to share an
IRQ with a low priority peripheral card).
The SBLive is so very accommodating to allowing IRQ sharing (because it has
to be if it chews up 2 separate IRQs on it's own)... which causes sporadic
behavior from the peripheral it is sharing the IRQ with, because the
creative drivers are intrusive little buggars.
Of course others have already gone into the bundled software nightmares with
it...

As you can probably tell... I am NOT a fan of the SBLive "technically
speaking". In fact... unless you create music from your computer and plan on
recording it... I would HIGHLY suggest looking into something with the
Aureal Chipset on it. The Xitel is a pretty nice card (www.xitel.com).

I hear a lot of praises for the SBLive on this NG... but there is SOOOO much
better out there once you look into how the SBLive operates behind the
scenes.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Cheers,

Schumi

Hi
Im no technical freak but. I am sure I got better frame rate with my SB Live
1024 installed. (+4 ish)

I am very pleased with it, hooked up to normal computer speakersand a HI-Fi
set up. Sounds really good in gpl and I could turn on more simultaneous
sounds.

But really impressed when I tried some other games sounds.

Cheers martin

Then what dows the emu10k (or something like that) chip do on the board? It
runs hotter when playing games and so on.....so it must be somekind of a
processor?

Then how come whenever the card is tested in magazines it has close to
0% CPU utilization and is actually using less recourses than any other
card on the market ?

Beers and cheers

Bollocks!

Bollocks again. It has been tested and shown that the SB Live! uses
less cpu cycles than the Aureal chipset cards. If you were talking
about SB16 emulation for dos then I would agree with you.

It uses one IRQ, same as any other sound card. It only uses a second
IRQ if you need to use SB16 emulation for Dos.

???

Any soundcard that shares an IRQ can be a problem. Same goes for video
cards.
