Help with N2002...

by Ed Solhei » Mon, 08 Apr 2002 02:20:36

Hi chaps,

I just recveived N2002 and I seem to have run into a few *** bugs..

First and formost: whilch 3d-rasterize is best to use?
I got a GF2 GTS/PRO card with 64mb.
I'm currently using D3D and 1024x768x16.

Now for the bug,
I cannot seem to get into Paintshop...  or morfe correctly - every time I
enter the paintshop N2002 freeze and the damn menusound just keep looping.
(What schmock thought of that anyway?)
The only way to sop the looping and get the PC up and running again is to
hit the reset-button.

Anyone got any tips on how to cure this?

My specs:

Win98SE
AMD 1,33ghz
384mb Ram
GF2 GTS/PRO 64mb with the 28.32 drivers...
SB Live! Value
MSI KT7-Turbo Mobo (Via KT133A)

I have a GF2 MX400, and use OpenGL, its about 10fps faster, OpenGL is faster on virtually every game
with a GF card.  Give it time to enter Paintshop, it takes awhile as it compresses/uncompresses the
texture files..I hope you paint your cars someplace else, like PSP.

Hi Ed,

as for the rasteriser, IMHO OpenGL is still better than D3D if you're
prepared to stick to 16 bit colour depth.

As for the Paintshop prob - I think at the US Pits there's a set of sound
files that disables menu sounds. Maybe that would cure your prob. If you
can't find it, I can mail you a set of sounds of my own that practically
disables all menu sounds.

I think I've read somewhere of a prob where N2002 didn't seem to configure
the sound card properly during installation, but my memory of that is very
dim - sorry.

The freeze you're experiencing is an issue with the D3D renderer with
nVidia
drivers of 23.11 or later (*** drivers). Solution: use OGL, use
<23.11
drivers, or wait for the patch.

OGL is faster, but doesn't support texture compression so everything
looks
blurry which kinda sucks, but at least it isn't freezing. Texture
compression
support will be in the patch.

Answer to you next question: I don't know when the patch is due, sorry.
;)

Wow, no wonder I didn't have this particular problem.  I just checked, I
have 23.10 drivers.  :-)  No driver updates for me!

It might be that his power supply ain't good enough.  It may be dsending
weird power signals to the agp slot.

Help with N2002...

Ed...

This won't solve your PS problem, but don't expect much from that video
card.  Its a little on the weak side for running N2K2.  A lot depends on the
size of your monitor, and what resolution you've been running other sims at
(sets the "standards" you are used to in racing sims).  You'll need to have
all your video card settings, system settings and correct drivers to eek out
the max from that card....or N2K2 will just frustrate you.

Seeing you live and die for a FPS Tom....   :-)    what sort of frustration
are we talking about here?

Indeed my card isn't what it used to be -  but I manage to get by....  for
now..:-)
I guess I could do with a better card, but for the time being I'll stick to
what I got. I'm more than happy to turn the resolution down a few
notches....  (19 inches has is't advantages (HEHEHE!)) and get a decent
framerate rather than smack on 1900xwhatever, pump up to full graphics and
48 sounds - and then compain that the game is poorly optimised because the
framerate is dead....

After switching back to OGL & 23.11 things seem to have improved and now PS
actually works..

Now... if I could only get to the bottom of this strange "freezing" or
pausing during loading of tracks on Sierra.com....  (the game freeze or
pauses ("hangs") - until I open and close the CD-drive, which - just like
magic - awakes the system again....  ???
