Never really did much on the Bristol track while playing Nascar 4, but now
I've got N2002 I'd love to learn how to race on this oval properly
(off-line). My problem is that I find it so difficult to pass cars, and when
I do it usually causes some type of accident!

Any advice to increase my racing skills here would be appreciated.

This is normal I believe.. I don't have much Nascar experience either,
but Bristol is one of the hardest tracks, if not THE hardest..
constant close racing (even if you're 3 laps down :) , *** the
tires and damn difficult to pass.
Just stay on the inside, use every passing opportunity and don't be
affraid to scrape some metal from your car :)

Btw, amazing how well the AI behaves at Bristol so far..

One of the best ways to pass is to get on someone's bumper, CLOSE, into a
turn, ride it through the turn, and blast pass them to the inside as you
exit the turn.

Be careful trying to outbrake going into a turn.  Also, when there's room
available per other cars, it's good to diamond the corners very slightly,
and clip the apron on turn exit.

  Works for me anyway :)

That's good advice John, if you watch the big boys, they dive in almost
touching the apron, come up off the at the apex a little, then almost touch
the apron exiting as well. This seems to keep the amount of 'brushing' the
wall on exits to a minimum. Hard to do in traffic tho...

All posters offered good advice, did you watch the driving lesson by DW as well?  Maybe for practice
try turning on the driving line as well.

Yep, exactly.  Also, N2002 is more realistic in terms of corner exiting
too; in the previous titles before N4, you could get back on the gas
anywhere in the turn, no problem.

In N2002 though, you need to exit as it's done in the actual races; roll
through the corners, and don't get back on the gas literally until you're
exiting the turn, car is more or less going straight again.
If you're fully back on the gas at the apex, sooner or later, you're going
to run into trouble :)

I agree.  A slight diamond when possible let's you run a looser setup
without loosing forward bite on the exit as bad.

Yup, trouble spelled c-o-n-c-r-e-t-e :) Not so bad in the play races with no
damage, a couple o taps with real damage has yeilded some interesting hood
shapes for me in 2002 thus far...The major concern in gassing at the apex
(aside from wall bangin) is the RF will erode more quickly.
