Longtime N1, N2, N3 Racer Needs Help With N2002...

by Ford 5 » Wed, 05 Mar 2003 01:43:47

Hi all. I have always been a big fan of the NASCAR Racing series for the PC
since N1. I have raced N1, N2 and N3, and had put off getting N4 for a long
time. Through the advice that was given to someone else on this NG, I decided
to skip N4 and go for N2002, would've gotten N2003, except the price
difference. I'm having a problem with it, that I'm sure there is something I'm
not noticing or not doing. I can go to Daytona or Talladega and I'm able to
control the car, even on the fast setup, but if I go to any of the other
tracks, especially the short tracks, the car is uncontrollable at best. I'm
running a Thrustmaster Pro Digital 2 Racing Wheel, and I'm running N2002 with
no patch. Should I download the patch, and if so what would it fix? Should I
update the drivers for the Thrustmaster?

I also realize that the driving model is different than N1, N2 and N3. I also
saw a link on this NG, www.sportplanet.com I think it was. And I downloaded the
driving and setup guide. In the setup guide it mentioned that you should try to
drive consistent laps on all three setups included with N2002. But the problem
is at any track other that the two that I've mentioned, I can't even get the
car to turn without the back end coming around. I'm running a 65% Steering
Linearity setting, should I be running it different? If I could just get this
figured out, I'll be happy. And if I learn how to drive a different way, I'll
gladly do it. Also, I've never went through a multiplayer race. My questions on
this are, is it free? Also, I don't have broadband, would it even be worth it
on dial-up? And if I do decide to start, what leagues are out there and are
there any leagues for N1, N2 and N3 still? My last two questions is, what are
the main differences in N4 and N2002, and what are the main differences between
N2002 and N2003.

I realize that you all are probably rolling your eyes, because these are dumb
questions, but I would really appreciate any help you all could give me,
because I really love the NASCAR Racing series, and I'm sad to see it go, but I
love finally getting to race at Daytona. :-)

Thanks for any help or suggestions you could give. :-)

Without trying to sound like an ass, starting with N4 you actually had to
drive the Nascar series games.  You can no longer stomp on the gas pedal and
crank the wheel.  2k3 is even more difficult in regard to stomping on the
gas than N4 and 2k2.  I remember when N4 came out there will plenty of
people that couldn't drive them at all(guys who didn't run GPL).  There is
no magic trick, you just need to lap and forget how you were able to drive
in previous versions.

Goodluck and go out and get 2k3, it's a vastly better game IMHO than 2k2,

Chad

And also, make sure you have your Brake and Gas pedals as TWO separate axes,
do not have it setup as a combined axis.

I'm running NR2003.  I play online with DSL, but play against people using
56K with
no problems most of the time.

I have linearity way up at around 95%.

Turn on "ideal racing line" and use it as a guide to learn how to drive
without spinning.  It
shouldn't take you long if you get nice and smooth on the inputs.  Short
tracks are difficult, you
have to brake and turn in while keeping the car balanced.  Start slow and
slowly increase your
speed.

Good luck.

If you're losing the back end, you are probably just going too fast into the
corner.  Start out real slow and slowly start increasing your speed through
the corners until you feel it start to get a little loose.  You can also try
adding some wedge to tighten it up in the corners.

I have the exact opposite problem: at Michigan I have no problems
at speed (best lap is in the 188's-no draft), but when I baby her into
the turns at the start-before the tires get heated up-half the time I'll
go into a sudden inexplicable spin, even if I am nowhere near the
maximum speed for that turn.  I've played with several different linear
settings (make it too high and she gets real twitchy), and have tried to
tighten up the setup, but I'll still swap ends half the time on the warmup
lap.  Very maddening when I am enjoying the rest of the sim.

I'm always real loose the first 2-3 laps until the tires get heated up so
maybe it's just a tire heat issue.
