Have FIA seen sense?

Seen the info at High Gear

- All new multiplayer Internet and LAN technology including EA SPORTS match
up service to make it easier than ever to find and race against other F12001
players online.

Perhaps they will use Motorcity Online technology?

Thanks

Thanks for the info.  Looks like Ubisoft is looking more and more idiot with
their "FIA doesn't want multiplayer" excuses.  The simracing community
SCREAMS for a serious F1 simulation with not only TCP/IP multi but also
community tools and client/server options.

Before you guys go off and think this is the second coming of God... I need
to inform you of a few "facts" about EA's 'Kesmai' online engine:

1) The developers (that I talked to off the record... a few) HATE it.... but
must use because the Publisher is EA, and that is their direction.
2) It is a subscription based online engine (pull out your wallets each
month mates...)
3) Limited in design (you get basic functions... not much else...)

This is actually the coming omen of dismay that you all have not seen
coming. Pay-for online *** that is just as bad (if not worse) than
current implementations, is now going to COST YOU to play each month. Hell
Scott Stutsman from Papy eluded to it this year "The cost of accomodating
Online Play is astronomical, and we are seeking solutions to curb this".

I hate to burst the bubble of joy on this, I really do... but my insider
information (pretty deep in most areas) tells me that my 'predictions' were
correct.... to the extreme.

This is actually a SAD day in Sim Racing fellas, but inevitable since the
bottomless pit of tech investment money dried up last year...

Cheers,

Schumi

Jason, you should post some details here about your upcoming online program
for F1RC.

Instead of taking a collection to patch GPL we should be passing the hat
to cover some dedicated servers on high capacity trunk lines.   We may end
up having to pay for our own online entertainment.

F1 2001 going to have Internet Multiplayer

In time Dave... in time...

We started our project 2 years ago, knowing the day of "pay-to-play" would
come. It is only now becoming a reality, and quite frankly I am disappointed
in teh SIM NEWS guys for not seeing it. This is the biggest story in online
racing in a decade, but yet they seem to have missed it (although reports
from E3 are clear, and the 'between the line comments' of publishers has
been equally clear for 2 years yet...)

We need look no further than WON.net backing into Flipside. At first glance
this seems like a harmless corporate move to consolidate... but if you are
looking for the subscription model indicators, this is VERY clear.

Bottom line:

Investors want to see a profit, and if the division is not showing a profit,
it is a burden. So... as I see it... Vivendi made the decision to roll
won.net back into flipside (which is a subscription based model), but yet
are still allowing PC gameplay for free. Scott S. (Papy) even eluded to the
costs of accomodating online play, and to me it smells like this:

Roll back won into flipside, so that won is not a standalone liability.
Rather, it is simply a division of flipside that is not genberating 'real
dollars'. So basically... it look like a subdivision in development (to the
investors, etc.). This is simply buying time folks... they are desperate for
a cost effective solution, I am sure of that (I have confidence in Papy's
integrity amd their dedication to the community as a whole).

So... unless they can at least 'cover costs' they are forced to do
subscription.

We saw this coming 2 years back, and have made preparations for its arrival.
We have been in contact with Papy regarding the issues, and are anxious for
them to see our solutiuon (which literally benefits everyone), and provides
the same qualitiews as TEN did.

I am cautious to mention this (hence our silence for 2 years), because we
simply want to complete the project and show it... and hopefully (for the
community's sake) the developer(s) will take notice and see that we can all
live happily together, with a HUGE list of features.

We'll do our best, and we hope y'all are happy with what we have done... but
I must warn ya... it is an uphill battle... one we are prepared (and have
preparrng for over 2 years to meet).

If you want non-subscription based online capabilities, we may be only a
handfull of companies that can find a way to make it work in the VERY near
future.

Cheers,

Schumi

F1 2001 going to have Internet Multiplayer

Hi Jason,

I like to read your posts, since they are one of few having a professional
aspect, namely money. You go well into detail but the quesiton remains what
your revenue source will be. Since you too are going to have costs, somehow
you'll have to cover them. If it's not the subscription fee, then it must be
some sort of adverti***t revenue, like place covered with banners and
similar stuff. Right ? Or is there a third way to make greenbacks online ?
Sorry for my impatience... ;) )

Surely you mean UDP/IP?

Anyway, based on the physics (braking/cornering ability) of modern F1
cars I for one doubt that they will be able to write good online
multiplayer code without some outrageously good prediction software.

I can tell you this ATM:

We have found a 3rd way to make money (a much more stable way too).

The subscription based model is not very popular (and lacks a lot of
imagination, etc.)
The advertising model has been a dead-horse from day one, you need look no
further than Heat.net, GameLoft, etc. to see that yourself. I am still
surprised to see some companies try to make this model work, I just don't
get it...

I will not elaborate too much on this atm, but I will announce it when the
software is released.

We have what I term "the circle of benefit" in our business model, and
believe we can solve all of the issues in online *** without the
requirement for end-users to pay, whilst increasing quality, and minimizing
costs..

Please allow a little more time, it will all become very clear to you in the
near future. We are aiming for a Next Sunday release (but as said on other
boards... there are a few things out of our control, namely the servers
installation, etc.)

Just a few more sleeps.

BTW... because there is no help from UbiSoft on our project for F1RC, a lot
of the already completed features will not be visible. Once a developer
steps up who can supply a small amount of support/cooperation for their
game, the features will be in full bloom.

Cheers,

Schumi

Even though I am not avid oline gamer (family and lack of time), I am a
businessman (semiconductors) and thus very interested to get to know this
3rd way of revenue (or benefit as you call it) raising. I'll be eagerly
waiting to see what you have in mind and hope that you succeed in your
project.

Good luck ! :)
